Guy McKinnon was interviewed on NZ radio today about his climb of the west face of Mt Tutoko - one of the greatest remaining challenges in New Zealand mountaineering. http://www.radionz.co.nz/audio/player/2563074

Thanks for posting this a great story.

Have read the reports and seen pics of his line, I don't think the scale of the achievment really comes across in the interview! A solo winter ascent of a 2000m unclimbed face in the Darrans without even carrying a rope.

Awesome!

Nice link in the article to the "Last Unclimbed Problems" of NZ, with an interesting take on how this particular climb would be done. Looks like he did it in far better style - very impressive.

For those of you that have climbed in NZ you may have heard of one of the sought after climbs in the 90's was the East Face of Popes Nose. It was climbed by a team of 4 of our best alpinists and recently got it's 2nd ascent and first solo ascent by local solo exponent Guy McKinnon who attempted to make it an integral with an ascent of the remote NE Face of Mt Aspiring. Just climbing the East Face of Popes Nose with walk in walk out commitment was ballsy enough.
Unfortunately weather and conditions were not conducive to him completing the linkup.
