Guy McKinnon interview

2:30:30 PM
Guy McKinnon was interviewed on NZ radio today about his climb of the west face of Mt Tutoko - one of the greatest remaining challenges in New Zealand mountaineering.

Thanks for posting this a great story.

Have read the reports and seen pics of his line, I don't think the scale of the achievment really comes across in the interview! A solo winter ascent of a 2000m unclimbed face in the Darrans without even carrying a rope.

Report from the Climber : - committing stuff indeed!

Nice link in the article to the "Last Unclimbed Problems" of NZ, with an interesting take on how this particular climb would be done. Looks like he did it in far better style - very impressive.

For those of you that have climbed in NZ you may have heard of one of the sought after climbs in the 90's was the East Face of Popes Nose. It was climbed by a team of 4 of our best alpinists and recently got it's 2nd ascent and first solo ascent by local solo exponent Guy McKinnon who attempted to make it an integral with an ascent of the remote NE Face of Mt Aspiring. Just climbing the East Face of Popes Nose with walk in walk out commitment was ballsy enough.
Unfortunately weather and conditions were not conducive to him completing the linkup.

This ascent of the East Face of Pope's Nose - combining scale, commitment and a harder & more sustained level of climbing - is arguably a significant advance in standard in the Southern Alps. In terms of soloing this is probably the first development (best word? I'm not that keen on saying 'progression' regarding soloing.) beyond Bill McLeod's winter climbs and perhaps some of Peter K Dickson's solo first ascents of some rock routes.

A super impressive application of Guy McKinnon's imaginative eye for a line and his impeccable style.

Though I am not a mountaineer, I am super-impressed by Guy's achievements on Tutoko and also the East Face of Popes Nose.
A fantastic achievement and testimony to the spirit of adventure.

Thanks to others earlier on this thread for posting the news of the ascents and the links.

He comes across as a humble bloke (through understatement), and certainly a patriotic New Zealander, in the live radio interviews, as the interviewers had to tease out the detail from him.

Well done for the ascents, and the inspiration, Guy.
