Goat Knotto @ Arapiles Easter 2013
Goat Knotto is a test of your knot-tying skills and a fund-raiser for Arapiles Rescue Group
Friday 29th March from 9:00 am at the ARG site at the foot of the Pines.
Tie three knots, double fishermans, alpine butterfly and re-threaded figure 8 in the shortest time possible.
Two open sections : in the blindfold section the knots have to be tied while blindfolded, the other section doesn’t require the blindfold.
Blindfold, First Prize Arapiles Select Guide, courtesy of Open Spaces Publishing
Open, First Prize Arapiles a million mountains, courtesy of Keith Lockwood
$5 to enter a section, $8 to enter both sections.
Young people ( climbers in year 12 and below), first prize BD Magnetron locking karabiner, courtesy of Arapiles Mountain Shop (gold coin donation).
Also door prizes, (even if we don’t have a door) including quickdraws and a guided climb with Louise Shepherd, courtesy Andrew Smith and Louise Shepherd..
Fun, bragging rights and prizes on offer. Sharpening your knot-tying skills can’t be a bad thing either. Also door prizes, (even if we don’t have a door).
Finals, if required, and presentations from 5:00 pm
More details will be posted here as things are finalised and on VCC website

Knotty Details (the fine print)
To enter, simply turn up on the day at the ARG site. If there's no queue, give us your details, and the donation for the section you wish to enter. Pieces of rope and a locked screwgate karabiner will be setup on a table. You will be seated in a chair next to the table, hands clasped behind back of the chair. At the word Go the clock will be started and you may begin to tie the required knots using the supplied materials. When the knots are complete, the knotted ropes must be left on the table and hands held above head. The clock will be stopped.
Knots must be correctly tied and dressed or the clock will be restarted and time added to the original time until the knots are correct.

Infrequently Asked Questions
Why a knot-tying competition? Apart from the obvious "Why (k)not?", tying knots correctly under pressure is crucial in climbing and climbing rescue. So knot-tying as a light-hearted competition seems like a good idea. It'll help people sharpen some skills and doesn't carry the risk of killing anyone while we do it.
Why these knots?
Double Fisherman's is no longer the knot of choice for joining 2 ropes for routine climbing abseil and rope retrieval. It is difficult to untie once weighted and prone to snagging on edges close to the anchor during retieval. The overhand knot with long tails is much more suitable for this purpose. But the DF is still a knot of choice for joining two ropes for a single line and climbers should know it. Breaks at between 75-95% of rope strength compared to 65-75% for rethreaded figure-8 used for the same purpose.
Alpine Butterfly is for forming a loop along a section of rope where the rope will be loaded on both sides of the knot. Good for belays, connecting stretchers and attendants etc.
Re-threaded figure-8. People use this all the time and the standard figure-8 is just too easy.
Why a blindfold section? Climbers should be able to confidently tie the knots they use in the dark. Head-torches are notoriously unreliable and will unexpectedly disappear from your daypack without saying goodbye.

It's not a bogong moth, but the lowest of the 3 knots in the graphic. It's a loop knot that can be stressed in multiple directions. I'll put a clearer explanation of the knot in the Infrequently asked questions post.

This is a PG-rated event (possible occasional coarse language).

And btw, the clove-hitch is a hitch, not a knot.

That's an example of an ascender of the soviet brutalist school of design.

If Andrew is the guy in the green t-shirt, it's an SRT ascender, probably the 7-11mm version because it doesn't look big enough to be the 9-16. They work quite well, and a bit of Sugru to make a comfier handle goes a long way.
Not that I've got a set in the bolting kit or anything.

What's a bolting kit?
Another quiz. How many SRT ascenders are visible in the photo?
