How long can climbers go without bitching?

But wouldn't it be so lovely if we could all speak to each other in a respectful and pleasant way regardless of differing opinions? For example:
"Hey Johnno (Matty, Fred, whoever) , thats a lovely frock you're wearing today. It's probably not a colour I'd wear personally, however it matches your army boots really well and GODDAMN if it doesn't just make your eyes pop!"

That sounds like a couple of suitable route names for new climbs, to me!
Heh, heh, heh.

Amen to that.

Nonsense! Climbers are the most inclusive and chilled out people I know.

I tend to be contrary and hyperbolic on Chockstone because I treat it as entertainment. But out in the mountains I think I'm pretty laid back.

Ps. I'm uncomfortable when people call climbing a sport because it has connotation of competition.

Does anyone remember chatrooms back in the 90s?
Tons of anonymous people talking shit ... then it got a bit more formalised & the internet became mainstream... now your post gets saved forever carved in (virtual) stone.
It surprises me sometimes how some people seem to think Chockstone is unique... Every topic and subgenre has a forum (or 200) dedicated to it.
It varies from white supremacy to huggies nappies.
Each has trolls, moderators & the occasional "real forum" post...

Bingo. Couldn't have said it better.

The idea that Chocky is somehow unique or exceptional in the nastiness department is garbage.

It only takes a short perusal of other website climbing forums (including the Australian ones), to realise that Chockstone is possibly the mildest amongst them! Little wonder that it is by far and away the most popular climbing forum in Australia*...
Viva la differenc e!!
Heh, heh, heh.

(*Stat from today's statistic page = 202043 total posts, 358 in the last week. Of 5975 registered members 192 logged in today, 414 in the last week, 1080 in the last six months. This is actually a low set of figures due not including lurkers, and also that January usually being a quiet month compared to others. I have also noticed the bitchyness is often worst towards the end of winter when people are still couped up inside when they would rather be out there climbing.)

Would chocky benefit if everyone had their real name.. Instead of 'user names' just a thought?

I think maybe it would be more appropriate to rename this thread: "how long can climbers go on bitching?"

macey

Haha! The whole underlying point of starting this thread was to see if it was possible for people to talk to one another, regardless of differing opinions, in a way that displayed some kind of respect for somewhat opposing stand points. It wasn't about seeing whether we could agree or not (as thats obviously unrealistic in ANY corner of the world!) but rather about how well we can respect each other as unique individuals with unique preferences, and whether or not we are capable of speaking to each other in a way that does not set out to discredit the choices made by those who do things differently to us.

I may not necessarily agree with the actions of people around me, however I still make an effort to speak to others in a respectful, diplomatic and open minded way whether online or face to face. We will never agree about everything, and once again, it's unrealistic to expect as much. However I DO feel much more thought could be given to the way we go ABOUT disagreeing.

I didn't name this thread "How long can climbers go without DISAGREEING", but rather "How long can climbers go without BITCHING". I admit that I'm not always the brightest star in the sky and sometimes I simply get things wrong or catch myself out of line, (I have since investigated the word "community" and as such, admit that, my second post was a hasty, misinformed and somewhat ignorant reply) however I always make the effort to treat others with the same respect that I'd like to receive from them, whether face to face, online, in a text or any other form of communication.
