Large rockfall came down off Mt Dixon today, falling SE-wards and covering much of the Grand Plateau and narrowly missing Plateau Hut. All climbers in vicinity reported to be OK and mostly evacuated.

Pretty scary stuff! We climbed the south ridge of dixon and descended the west face (were all the rockfall is) in December. Hard to get scale from that picture but I read somewhere there is 3km by 500m of debris on the glacier

woot! new route potential.

not really surprised - that bit between haast and dixon was super poxy. went to try to climb it once to find big blocks stacked on small blocks stacked on weetbix.

ps west ridge of dixon is to the right of the sumit (i think. its been a while)

Gonzo, West ridge is what connects Dixon to Haast http://climbnz.org.nz/nz/si/aoraki/tasman-glacier/grand-plateau/mt-dixon

Imagine the view and the noise from plateau hut while it was happening! Lucky nobody was climbing Dixon or crossing the plateau. Goes to show that it's not just avalanches you have to worry about in steep places.
