This is some of the best mountain footage I have ever seen, especially for anyone who has been up the Baltoro. Revolutionary stuff.

Stunning. Amazing how stable the drone is given the environment it's flying in. Wonder how long it can fly for without a recharge / refuel?

Yeh, that struck me too. Very smooth.

I don't know the flight time, though I know some of the ones being used here are only good for 15min or so, depending on any payload etc.

Edit: Friend on the trip says flight time was 10 minutes

Impressive quality footage there. I suspect mountain film making just took a massive leap forward. A friend of mine spent a small fortune on light aircraft to make a ski movie in the alps a few years back. I'm sure those little flying buggers aren't cheap either, but wow amazing things you could do with them.

In Australia I think the suitable drones are maybe $5-20,000 depending on the model (radio story a few days ago).

Helicopters in remote areas are easily $5,000 - $15,000 *an hour*. Of course they give human transport, but they are also dangerous. Once the drones get longer flight time and better payload, for filming there will be no contest.

In the polar regions they would also be good launched off ships to scout ice conditions, not to mention their value in disaster areas etc.

a colleague of mine has purchased one very recently and intends to charter it out for filming etc, it's one of those self stabilised UAV things. Not sure if he's up and running yet nor do I have any ideas on pricing but I can put anyone in touch with him if they are after that kind of thing. If this is a bit spammy let me know and I'll delete

It would be interesting to see how the $250 copter works - it costs less than the GoPro it says it can carry!

Real estate agents, developers, paparazzo etc are getting into them, or at least the bigger more powerful UAVs. It's early days but anyone should know that these UAV are subject, in Australia, to CAA rules, just like a manned aircraft. You can't just buy one of these drones and start flying around filming, at least not legally.

That's what the ABC radio program was - someone had looked out the window to find a drone filming their house, down the South Coast, and reporters went around investigating where it came from.

Yeah, the guy I know has a commercial helo license and flies fixed wings for a living and from talking to him he is aware of the regs covering them, I think you need an AOC! blardy CASA...

problem with the cheaper ones is usable payload, glass is heavy and expensive so needs to be reliable.

Awesome - I've been practising hippy-shit astral travel as a way of pre-scoping routes so I can then snag an on-sight. Now I can send in the drone to check it out for me. If only I can work out a way of attaching a toothbrush and chalk dabber to clean up the holds in preparation aswell.....rock on 21st century!

Tim had one of these in the pines over summer. Don't quote me on this but I think they used it scope some routes. Cool little toys, fascinating to watch it get controlled by an iphone.

Hmmm, remote drone ($250-$20000), camera ($300-$3000), all the bits needed to build an orange gun (about $30), the look on some idiots face as a 25 cent citrus projectile blows their multi thousand dollar gadget out of your airspace........priceless

I think they were using one of these in the Peak district a few years back for filming the Mammut team (of which Lama is a member).

There are a few at work equipped with thermal imaging cameras.... Pretty nifty bits of kit!
