This is true, I guess I am forgeting all those little N.P's in the middle of vast farmlands which are full of ferals.

Labor is now pointing to the Shooters website and a "frequently asked questions" section about how the new arrangement will operate.

"National parks will not be closed and there will be no close supervision by NP staff," the website says.

Opposition environment spokesman Luke Foley says that statement directly contradicts assurances given by Premier Barry O'Farrell.

"The strict supervisions that Mr O'Farrell claims will be in place just won't be there. That's a risk to the public's safety and to the safety of our hardworking national parks staff," Mr Foley said.

"When hazard reduction burns occur and indeed when professionals are brought in to cull ferals in our national parks at the moment, those parks are closed."

"Yet the Shooters party have now revealed that when their blokes go into national parks under their deal with Mr O'Farrell, the parks won't be closed and the recreational hunters won't be subject to supervision."

Before the legislation passed Parliament, Environment Minister Robyn Parker also gave assurances.

I have a horrible feeling someone will get hurt. People hunting in public rec area's is not a good idea. NSW climbers might have to start wearing bright red and avoid bumbling through the scrub. Some might have to have a shave and scrub up as the conservation minded shooters will be out to cull the 'ferals'.

The script of a climbing movie with a difference comes to mind.... party of climbing mates lost in the bluey's come across a group of good ol' boys only too willing to help.... Bango twanging in the distance.
Mikl would be a shoe in for a lead role, Wall Wombat, WWS with a cameo from M9.

It would be a brave hillbilly (without a sense of smell) that would go anywhere near WW&S.

Kinda offtopic...
Deliverance, the movie, although interesting, was not entirely accurate from a bowhunters perspective...
I have through-shot with a broadhead arrow a reasonably mature pig, that was grazing by a farm dam at the time. The arrow after having penetrated the lung/heart area was embedded in the earthen embankment of the farm dam, while the pig continued to graze seemingly unaffected, ... though it did flinch as the arrow went through...
Not long after, the pig dropped dead due to its chest cavity being filled with internal bleeding.
~> All in all a desirable result at the time, and a perfect example of the effectiveness of an arrows method of killing.

When the pig-penetrator in the movie received the arrow in his back that stuck out of his chest enough for him to realise that he had been shot with it, I call BS(!), as in my pig hunting example he would not even know he had been shot unless he happened to glimpse the arrow striking a point somewhat beyond his chest...

~> None of this reality takes away from the compelling viewing whilst I was sitting in the movie theatre at the time however!
;-)

Will the above also equate for the climber halfway up the wall, they won't know they've been shot they will wonder why there is suddenly a big sticky red patch on the rock in front of their chest?
I also wonder how long before vic rednecks and gun lobby get our state to follow suit. They just allowed an open cut gold mine in the Wombat state forest why not give shooters free range. Lots of deer in my fav spots in the vic range that need culling.

The New South Wales Game Council wants children as young as 12 to be able to hunt with bows and arrows in the state's national parks.

From March adults will be allowed to shoot feral animals in 79 national parks, nature reserves and state conservation areas.

The culling program was approved last year in a deal between the State Government and the Shooters and Fishers Party.

Game Council chairman John Mumford says he would like the rules to be relaxed to allow minors to hunt in national parks, both with guns and bows and arrows.

I must be getting argumentative in my aging process, as this outcome is annoying to me too!

The amount of times I see on TV news about relatively urban kangaroos etc being found with arrows sticking out of them, but still hopping around very much alive (much to the angst of general public and RSPCA alike), is testimony to complete nobs using inappropriate hardware (often 'field tipped' arrows better suited to static target archery), on inappropriate game, in inappropriate places.

I also fear it is only a matter of time till another hunter, or worse, an innocent member of general public, is involved in a similar 'accident' in the Parks, through similar interaction, not to mention the fauna that shouldn't get shot, ending up mistakenly done so.

I know democracy isn't perfect but something is seriously f---ed when 99% of the population is against this but it's still going ahead.

democracy and referendum are not the same. If 99% are against it you can probaby assume that nearly all the people who voted for the liberals in the state elections are unhappy too.

What a ridiculous moral panic. I love the over the top picture. I am surprised they didn't give the hunter a beard and a turban.

You are an American. Shooting people is a national pastime there, so I take your opinion on this subject with a grain of salt.

Sorry but I do.

If you read the blog, two people have been killed by hunters in NZ national parks in the past few years. That seems to provide an adequate basis for thinking there is a real risk of it happening here.
