Excuse my ignorance of modern history and the English language, but wouldn't it make more sense the other way around - being that it is better to die on your feet than live on your knees?

~ "You'll never find your limits until you have gone too far". ~

Aron Ralston; (from his book Between a Rock and a Hard Place).

Is this an oxymoron (of sorts), ... or just a self evident truth? !!!

if you've seen first ascents you've seen the quote, but i reckon its gospel. talking about the black canyon
and putting up first ascents there:

"you either got the spirit or you dont...if you got the f---ing spirit you rock. and if you dont.....well then
you're just a sport climber" leonard coyne

No, just a moron.

I hate quotes like that. They are the kind you used to see on No Fear T-shirts worn by bungey jumpers and sport abseilers. Wanna-be adventure tools!

The fact that it comes from someone who ended up cutting his own arm off because of stupid mistakes he made, makes the quote even more ridiculous.

"oh well, I've cut my arm off. I guess I've found my limit!"

Get real!

Just for the record I did not say I agreed with the quote though I did find it interesting; hence the oxymoron jibe.

Limits? (In the context of adventure), they are often self imposed aren't they!

I wasn't saying you did agree with it, Rod, and yes it is an oxymoron.

"climbing might be in your blood, but even a vegetarian has to eat protein"

Some advice given to me a by a friend - but I'm yet to figure out the metaphor!
(plus I'm not vegetarian!)

This quote is just as relevant to drinking Martinis.

"Call it a route, call it a climb, call it a game, because you and your friends made up the rules and (mostly) obeyed them, because how you got there was more important than just getting there, because really we're only playing (aren't we?), not climbing for something, or to something, or with something else in mind."

"I groan for the present sorrow. I groan for the sorrow to come. I groan questioning when there shall come
a time when He shall ordain a limit to my suffering." - Prometheus, soon after being chained to the rock.

"He with sorrows many as are mine, how shall he not be glad to gain his death?" - Antigone

Greek tragedies have some great climbing quotes buried in there.

Not quite sure what the Antigone quote has to do with climbing.
