If it was a Queensland proverb it would have been spelled "Jamb".

Phil--- I think you will find that it should in fact be spelled (sp?) as ' jamB '--- the B was a typing error that went to print in Thrutch ? , and then became more popular than the Henry's-flat-hat craze...

It wasn't a typo as such, it was a confusion with door jamb. And yes, it come out of Thrutch and was picked up and repeated with much glee by certain parts of the climbing (or should that be climing?) scene. To rub a bit of salt in (ha, a bit more condiment for the cauldron!) it was spelt with the capital 'B' to rubbish the Q'landers. I think the article was called 'Frogwyn the Harder', sort of rhymes with Clogwyn D'ardu.

And further more :

There is probably not a more (in)famous climb [infinity] in Australia. It was here that the well-known Queensland technique, ' the diagonal jamB ' was originated by Rick White as the 60s gave way to the 70s. The photo in Thrutch depicted him ' jamBing diagonally across the bulge on Infinity '. Rick took merciless 'stick' over the incident during the interstate 'wars' of the early ' 70s. I played my part in administering it lavishly. I was determined , therefore, never to get on to the route with Rick any closer than Brisbane.
But times change. Now , as the ' 70s roared into the ' 80s , the moment of truth had arrived. Rick sat on top grinning, after this umpteenth lead of one of the finest looking cracks I'd seen. Quips about ' diagonal jamBs ' faded from my lips as the last of the slack disappeared.
...Soon I was away up the purest jam-crack I can remember. For 10 metres it was the pure joy of continuous movement in a single wrist-locking crack.
Safely on top , it took some minutes to catch my breath sufficiently to allow me to resume my light-hearted jibes at Rick's expense...

Thanks for that , Chris (1983) --- I quite enjoyed cyber-climbing that warm rock with you today !

Luv, HEX

i've seen them t-shirts elsewhere but that ain't where the quote came from. the quote i stated came years before i saw that variation of it but funnily enough it too was on a t-shirt sold at the oktoberfest in germany...so i guess it's all beer related.

Yeah that's right Benjo, you can get great recovery from hanging on draws... but only in Victoria. People call it invalid or some shit in NSW, I guess that's cause everyone's so ethically pure in NSW.
