Not a quote, but this sign could do your head in.
(p.s. the park now has a name, Mamungari, which I suspect is Pitjantjara for "unnamed")

from an Eiger Sanction thread on supertopo

Woman Journalist: Tell me, Mr. Bowman, in your opinion do these men climb to prove their manhood, or is it more a matter of compensating for inferiority feelings?
Ben Bowman: Lady, why don't you go get yourself screwed. It would do you a lot of good.

[Hemlock saves Meier from falling off the mountain]
Anderl Meier: You're very good. I have really enjoyed climbing with you.
Dr. Jonathan Hemlock: We'll make it.
Anderl Meier: I don't think so. But we shall continue with style.

And my favorite:

Ben Bowman: Wanna Beer?
Jonathan Hemlock: You gonna call room service?
Ben Bowman: We got beer.
Jonathan Hemlock: If you hauled beer up this rock you're insane!
Ben Bowman: I may be insane, but I'm not stupid. I didn't carry it, You did! It's in your pack.
Jonathan Hemlock: Christ, I outha throw you off this pillar! Besides, It's warm.
Ben Bowman: Sorry, just knew you'd draw the line at haulin' ice.

It’s strange I have never heard of a rogue trader bringing in billions in profits - only the losers are “rogue” traders.
What are rogue traders that make billions called - hedge fund managers?

"My rule is: if you can run up it, then it isn’t a climb. I also don’t like the idea of feeling I’m on this hostile mountain, fighting for my life and sanity, trying to juggle the summit or my toes, only to have some miserable fell runner with Vaseline on his balls and nipples jog past me in his dayglo shorts."

A couple of Mallory quotes, showing how much his attitude has deteriorated recently;

1920's Mallory;
"What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for."

Mallory now;

"What we get from this adventure better be what was promised in the brochure! We do not live and eat to make money. We work and make money so that we can afford to pay brown people to tow us up mountains which are way too hard for us to actually properly climb on our own"

20's;
"The first question which you will ask and which I must try to answer is this; What is the use of climbing Mount Everest? and my answer must at once be, it is no use. There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever.”

now;
"What is the use of climbing Mt. Everest? Well........I'm planning to publish a book, and get on the motivational speaking circuit. A lot of people who don't know anything about climbing will see it on my cv and think it means I'm a bigtime climber........basically it's a career move. My modeling shows that I'll pay the trip off in 2 years with the extra revenue the raised status will generate."

1920's;
“I look back on tremendous efforts & exhaustion & dismal looking out of a tent door on to a dismal world of snow and vanishing hopes.”

now;
"I look back on tremendous efforts and exhaustion........that the Sherpas seemed to go through as they did all the hard work. I was looking out the tent door onto a dismal world of vanishing beer, that hot russian chick stripping for photos, and a patchy internet connection.......the dance party in the HimalayanAdventureExtreeemeConsultants tent was starting to hot up, I wandered over for a boogie."

And the classic:.......

then;
“Why do you want to climb Mt. Everest?"
"Because it's there..........and no one has done it yet, so being the first one to go up there will be kinda cool.........that's the adventurous part, y'know. Being way out there on my own and shit."

Now;
"Mt. Everest? Is that where this fixed line goes? I randomly clipped on back in town and here I am............I'm such a free spirit, I wander wherever the fixed toprope leads.........just me and my jumar, off to see the world"

In the spirit of Everest bashing, I liked a quote I read in a magazine article, I think by Greg Child. He may have been quoting someone else.

"just 'cause its the biggest sh!tpile in the world, doesn't make it the best sh!tpile in the world....."
