Travel insurance: ihi Bupa policy wording change

I'm quite surprised that any form of canopy jumping is covered. In my brief experience, I would rate it a much higher risk than climbing. Deaths are not that common in either sport, but the potential for injury (broken legs, ACL, etc) in skydiving seems huge. It also seems that risks increase with experience as people take more risks (e.g. swooping) to get more thrills.

I could be talking through my anus though. This has been known.

Just in case anyone is curious, I got to the bottom of climbing coverage for an Australian who has already left the country:

IHI Bupa - No coverage for climbing, no exceptions
AAC - Search and rescue cover, but extension not possible if you have already left your home country
insure4less - After some email back and forth, agreed to cover up to 6500m, even though I had already left Australia.

Hope that helps.

Can you get insurance for that?

And I've emailed IHI Bupa for a definition of 'mountaineering' in their policy wording.

Am looking at getting medical coverage only for sports/trad climbing and snowboarding outside of Australia.

I think you can get insured through the Austrian Alpine Club after you become a member. They cover everything including serious search and rescue mission.

From memory the insurance is included when you become a member. We joined for a trip to Europe. It was pretty cheap (maybe $50 a person?), and you got some minor discounts at Refugio's. Didn't have to use the insurance, so I can't comment on how good it is, but it seemed good in theory.

Why do i get the feeling this discussion keep recurring? In summary, the options are:

AAC UK branch - It's the only alpine club you can join and get coverage from in Australia. The BMC and NZAC won't cover you. You get as many trips of up to 6 weeks covered through out the year. It costs about 40 pounds. You can pay for extra time on any trip but you have to go through their insurer, not them. It's rescue/medical coverage only, not general travel insurance and some people are concerned about the $ limits on it.

IHI - useless these days as they specifically exclude climbing and have done so to all enquiries in the last few year.

Insure4less - are not insure for less! they are costly, they have some weird ideas and exclusions, but they seems to have agreed to cover most people's trips so far and paid out on a few claims. It will give you all your insurance in one.
