On Saturday 26 July at about mid-day I was not logged in to Chockstone due the short timeframe I had available at the time, and I noticed a spam advertisement on Chockstone of the following;
sell climbing chalk, multi-function survival knife

Author = hisunsoutdoor

we are professional manufactory export rock climbing chalk ball, but now my profit is very very small, 60g chalk ball is only USD0.55/PC, 350 crushed chalk bag is only 1.75/pc, I would like to know what is the reasonalbale price for it, as my profit is only 5% now, I don't know if I can add a little but it still have a good sell. What price per unit all that climbing hobbyer can accept?

Thanks for good advice.

my email is:

very cheap, distributor welcome

I did a quick copy and paste of that spam to bring it to the attention of Moderators later when I logged in with spare time available, and hence why I am able to post with detail about the SPAM.

I certainly did not follow any links it contained, which I have deleted from the above quote.

A short while later that post disappeared, presumably deleted by a diligent Chockstone Moderator for the spam that it was, so I thought it was done and dusted... Thanks Mods!

HOWEVER, late afternoon today 27/07/14 I received a lengthy spam email from the same mob.

The only connection is Chockstone, so presumably my email address was harvested off this site, even though it isn't exactly spam friendly due to replacing @ with (at) within that email address, as listed in my Chockstone Profile.
I know this tactic is not foolproof and that it would likely be bypassed sooner or later, but thought I'd let others on this site know, as a heads up, or indeed in case something can be done about such spammers.

Hopefully if a spambot or similar, was placed on Chocky, it can be removed??

Below is an edited down version of the spam email I received for the record.

~> To the chinese spammer involved;
I see you also picked up my name from my profile. All I can say in response is F#*+☻U.

I have since dealt appropriately with the email spam through my service provider options available.

I deleted the original and disabled the user M9 but never got the email...

Guessing this is low tech spamming and manually done. Feeling a little left out not getting my email spammed. Maybe my post count isn't high enough for them to be bothered. ;-)

I reckon they probably assumed that anyone who climbs at Grade M9 is sure to be a big chalk user so therefore an obvious target for this type of spam

Thanks for the feedback dalai.
I think on both the post count as well as the chalk-use count they missed the prime target of nm, ... especially as I am still using the 2nd ever block I have bought since climbers started using chalk(!) ~> probably a result of a penchant for climbing dirty chossy climbs that don't require it!

On the grade thing, they obviously have not worked out that chalk is about the only thing clean-aid climbers don't use!

Upon revision I also see the spammer can't make up their mind regarding what phone number to supply us.
If I was to buy anything off same, it would be the survival knife, in order to gut feral chalk balls being cast in my direction...

For the rest of the inmates of the chockyasylum, beware, you too could be next on the spammers list!

Friday night I received 2 successive calls from "tech support" scams. I think they were from the same operation as they were giving the same script. I gave them both the usual spiel about them working a scam and hung up.
Then the second guy rang back, apparently outraged that I had hung up on him. I've never had that happen before. He proceeded very deliberately to spell out A-S-S-H-O-L-E . I didn't have the heart to tell him that this was completely ineffective to non-americans. All most amusing.

my standard reply to spammers (there is usually a wait before they start )
I am sorry but I don't speak English and I don't have a computer ,TV , nor I am connected to the electrical grid !
They don't ring back straight away like they do with most other replies

I tell them that I've tracked their ip via the phone and will be passing on their details to the AFP. They tend to hang up after that..

In the past I was polite and listened then said "no thank you..." but have developed anti-call-centre reflex: if no human on line in 2 seconds I hang up — usually you can hear call centre ambiance as the auto-dial hooks you up to a human. Or if a quick human but doesn't know my exact name - bang. Gone. Life is too short to waste a word on these businesses.

I must have too much time on my hands as I go the other way with them for amusement!

(Setting the scene; Call centre ambience in background...)
Up until 15 July for this year my record time for keeping one of the 'tech support' spammers tied up on the phone with me was 6:57 minutes.
On the 16th I was stoked to break my record when I got a bloke trying to tell me my mother-server was corrupted and needed looking at. I managed to spin him out for 13:25 mins, before he went to get his supervisor to 'assist' me! At this point my own phone was low on power and so I had to hang up...

On another occasion last year, I had one of similar nature and we went round in circles for 8 or 9 minutes, and when I couldn't help myself from breaking out laughing, the spammer broke out into laughter too!
He then said "Ok mate" (with obvious joy in his voice), and ended the call himself in a very amicable fashion!

By the way, the 'acma - don't call register', isn't worth the paper it is printed on, when it comes to overseas based call centres.

This is another way to deal with unwanted phone calls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7OgWcwgB50
