How are you going to pay - if by credit card, many will only deliver to the credit card holder's address.

In the past MEC have delivered to any address however I'm not sure if they'll ship most of their stock to the US.

I just ordered a whole pile of gear from

www.backcountrygear.com

great prices - even getting it shipped to Australia - and these guys have no problem shipping it to Australia. If you analyse what it costs for freight compared to what I get paid per hour in relation to how much time it would take me to visit all the different retailers you'd have to go to in Oz to get the different bits of gear, these guys win hands down. I am ordering about $500 lots of gear at a time though, and not mega bulky stuff like ropes.

I have just done a bit of a price comparison on some random gear - the analysis shows that to buy gear in Australia (Black Diamond anyway), it costs about 60% more (Ozi dollar at 0.92). Shipping doesn't seem expensive either (at least from backcountrygear.com) - I was quoted US$60 for shipping about five kilos.

Manufacturer Item: (US supplier)Price USD AUD equivalent Price AUD(Oz supplier)

Black Diamond Fifi Hook- Various $8.95 $9.73 $19.95

Black Diamond Diamond Talon $16.50 $17.93 $33.95

Petzl Ascension-Blue-Right-Hand $59.95 $65.16 $79.95

Black Diamond Pecker #2 - Black $11.95 $12.99 $29.50

Black Diamond Pecker #3 - Black $12.95 $14.08 $29.50

Black Diamond Yosemite Hammer - One Size $87.50 $95.11 $179.00

Black Diamond Anodized Stopper Set # 4-13 - V $68.95 $74.95 $149.95

Black Diamond Camalot C4 - #1 - Red - 1.19 - 2.05 in. $62.50 $67.93 $111.95

Black Diamond Camalot C4 - #3 - Blue - 2.00 - 3.44 in.$68.50 $74.46 $111.95

Total USD$397.75 AUD$432.34 AUD$745.70

Becuase there are lots of Yanks (present company accepted of course) that do not know where Mexico is, let alone Austria, err, I mean Australia.

There is a really good shop that i just bought a mthard wear jacket from and on most things the shipping is $35US, so if you buy in bulk it might save you a far bit..
They packaged it up very nicely and it got here within 8 days not bad at all. To top it off they have sooooo many things on sale its not funny. even cheaper prices!!! I ended up getting about $100 off the aussie price.

Don't be too smug mate. If you talk about identifying neighbouring countries, most Australians couldn't find the Philippines on a map of the Philippines!

It's getting easier these days, try Google Maps

What is this "Australia" of which you speak?

Edited to add: For shipping to Tokyo, I order often from:

(i) REI (which in the past has been willing to ship to an address other than the card billing address):

http://www.rei.com/

(ii) Mountaingear (haven't tried shipping to an address other than the card address)

In answer to Dom's question, it's probably distribution agreements between manufacturers and distributors/retailers limiting the places those retailers can sell to. That is, if Brand X Climbing Gear has an exclusive distribution agreement with Company Y Outdoor Store in Australia, Brand X may not allow its distributors in other parts of the world to ship to Australia. That's international business for you.

I get most of my gear from the USA.... i did an order direct with black Diamond not so long ago and with the strong aussie at the moment, wow what a saving!!! Australia is a rip-off for climbing gear! Eg... my ice axe i ordered direct from BD and it cost be almost 1/3 of the price than in the stores here, and that is after the exchange rate and freight.

What i normally do it go to the shops here in Aus get fitted / check out the gear and then get it from the us... HUGE savings... always amazes me the mark up here in Aus when you can get it so cheap at RETAIL prices in the US.

This is a really rude thing to do. By all means order from the us (the prices are great due to the weak us dollar), but don't be surprised if people in the australian shops get angry if you mention you are fitting it here, but ordering from there! Same goes for exchanges if something goes wrong.

www.rockempire.com is worth checking out for a startup rack.

> Australia is a rip-off for climbing gear!

I don't won't argue about the price of gear, as I have started doing some major ordering from the US too. What you CAN'T get from the US is local service when you need it. For example (let me get on my soap box for a minute, then I'll get back in it) - I was finding it really hard to get some climbing shoes that I could wear for more than half an hour (think Booroomba slabs), and I couldn't even get some from the US in my size that I could be sure would fit me (I bought two pairs from the US and had to onsell my lovely Boreal Cruxs to my cuzzi bro becuase they just did not fit). I talked to the Rock Hardware dudes about it, and Steve sent me three pairs of Scarpa Thunders and told me to mail back the two pairs that did not fit. All things from Rock Hardware turn up the next day (in Canberra, at least), often while I'm still in the shower getting ready for work (sounds like the Australia Post add with that cute girl in the bed with the post box). Sometimes good service is just priceless. OK, back in my box.
