Which shoes for me?

If you had to choose between the following shoes, which would you pick, and why? (Price is not a factor) I'm pretty new to climbing.
1. Mad Rock Phoenix
2. Mad Rock Frenzy
3. La Sportiva Cliff
4. Five Ten Gambit

Or if you don't like any of those, maybe you'll recommend something from the MEC website. (scroll down to see the shoes!)

I haven't tried any of them yet, but let's assume they all fit me fine and are all comfortable...AND I want to do gym walls, top rope and sport climbs.

They're all fine for your use and experience. Get the ones that fit best.

La Sportiva will generally have the best 'build' quality, 5.10 have generaly the best rubber, and Mad Rock
offer the best bang for your buck.

If your new to climbing, get something comfy...but it depends on what you want to do with them.

It looks like your trying to save money by buying on line. Leave that for the people who actually know the shoes they want to purchase, i.e. repeat purchase. Go into the shops and keep trying on shoes till you find a few that suit your foot shape and are comfortable and then make your choice.

Remember they are not walking shoes. Toes hard up in the end and uncomfortably tight. As all shoes mold/stretch so there is nothing worse for your climbing than floppy shoes.

Also best go lace ups for your first pair. Helps tighten them once stretched as you will go too loose.

Normal to not wear socks either.

Hit the search function to check out the many topic on climbing shoes and there sizing...

@AlanD - Trogdor is in Cananda, so MEC could be their local. If not buy local so you can try them on Trogdor!

If they are a firm fit then get the Gambit, it is fitted with the new Onyx rubber that is hard rearing and has
a good shape to it so will climb as well as you do, if they dont fit then go with the mad rock they are great
entry level shoes and cheap as well!

Yes, yes, AlanD and dalai, I plan to go to MEC in person after I hear all your suggestions. Thanks! Are these prices comparable to Oz? I think $1CAN is roughly $1.07 AUS.

Not all of us prescribe to the Dalai's Japanese foot binding technique. These days most of us go for lightly curled toes, rather than the Japanese foot binding techniques of a decade ago.

The Canadian prices of the shoes are significantly less than the same shoe in Australia.

First pair of shoes, I'd be considering lace up shoe, not to technical, but an all rounder, so you seem to be going down the right pathway, but see also what is available in the other stores.

Madrock shoes blow. Don't do it. Stick to either La Sportiva or 5.10.

The two pairs of Madrock's I've had, I've binned within 3 weeks of having them.

You get what you pay for.

I'm still using my madrocks that i bought more than 3 years ago, They are my full time training and trad
shoes, and have held up well (after a resole).

Pretty crap. My 'redpoint' shoes are my Sportiva Muiras, which have superior rubber and edging. My Mad
Rocks are comforatble, have a great fit and have structurally lasted well. They have great heel cups for
hellhooking so are fine for anything steep. They are pretty much the shoe that won't die at the moment
(the've had several deep water soloing sessions recently!)

I use Madrock shoes and am very happy with them!
