I’ve been keeping an eye on the development of the new D4 ledges and while I categorically do not need one, I really want one;) Their range of ledges are looking pretty awesome and their collaborative approach to innovation is pretty cool. I’ve bought a few things from Luke at Runout customs (he’s making the alpine ledge) and really like his work; strong, well finished and cool colors;)

Cool gear;

Yep the D4 Trapezium is ace: supper light weight and flick to deploy. I've given up on my own home made portaledge and saving for one of these!

If you can get to Arapiles this week, then John Middendorf and family are camped at the top of the Pines. He has a few different portaledges hanging in the trees by his camp. It would be a good opportunity to speak to the man himself and check out the different designs in the flesh.

Thanks for the info Simey. It’d Be rad to see one in the flesh but alas, work will likely keep me from having a look.

Simey, if you happen to catch up with JM this week, could you please mention the upcoming Buffalo Aidfest to him?
He might like to attend and share camaraderie of the aid rope/s as his resume is impeccable; ... and maybe claim demo-ing his products as a tax deduction to cover expenses!
;-)

Hi M9,
I mentioned this gig to John and he certainly was interested, but I'm not so sure he can make it to Buffalo for that weekend. However I'm pretty sure he said he would be happy to lend a ledge for the weekend for people to check out. If you don't get onto him, let me know and I can pass on his contact details.

Thanks for bringing it to his attention simey, and thanks for the feedback.
Depending on the mix of attendee experience, still to be confirmed for the upcoming event, I will pursue it further. In that case I figure the link TimP gave will facilitate contact.

Hi M9!

Simey mentioned this thread.

I handed off my loaner prototype Trapezium (a new frame design which I need tested) to Chris in Arapiles, he mentioned he was going to Buffalo, not sure if he is going to the aid fest though. I am hoping this new frame will prove to be the go for a larger order of tubes which will be built by Tufa Climbing in USA.

I have a D4 Alpine Double loaner and a D4 full size ledge here in Tas, but might be using them for an event in the Tarkine at the end of the month. When is the aid fest?

If any wall climbers coming to Tas, come visit my shop! I am in the process of transitioning out of my design phase of the past two years, and back hopefully to my teaching career, but still interested in working with crafty partners to help make some of these new designs. I have a good line on the aluminum frames and better materials from USA suppliers, and plan to still make a few more batches later this year in Tasmania (maybe Anna will help) but primary production of the D4 line is now being made in three shops in the USA (Durango Sewing Solutions, Runout Customs, and Tufa Climbing).
My main interest has been to foster this new paradigm in ledges, and I feel this is nearing completion with the shops in the USA. But still I imagine keeping enough materials on hand for a few prototypes, and also a new design (a whole new shape) I plan to keep tinkering on (as well as a radical new expedition tent design which has been rattling around my brain), so if any Aussie climbers need a ledge, let me know, and I will see what I can do. Deuce4@bigwalls.net best way to contact me!

Cheers and thanks for the good words!

It’s great to hear that your venture is going well Deuce4, and I’m stoked for the progress in big wall bivvy shelters for mortal climbers as a result of your efforts, along with no doubt, new achievements in wall climbing being done as a consequence of great living quarters in that environment.

Re simey demo-ing your new combo idea...
Scary stuff as a model!
A suggestion if I may...
Maybe mention he stands 6’8” tall in thongs ~ (a larger than life character! Heh, heh, heh), to give people an idea of the size of the Combo?

Re date of the upcoming Buffalo Aidfest; it’s slated for 24-25 November.

If I get any enquiries (ongoing commitment on my part), about portaledges, I shall be referring them back to this thread.

Oh goody, a guessing competition for us ignorant mainlanders! ~> so my turn now ;-)
Tyndal Range?

Crazyjohn and sliamese would know, but they’re disqualified as they are local!
Heh, heh, heh.

The picture of Chen Hing and Lottie in the Trapezium?

Not exactly sure! I think it might be Tyndalls, haven’t been there yet.
