2 person 4 season tents. Latest and greatest?

I'm looking for a lightweight 2 man tent strong enough for Australian winter snow conditions. Ideally as light as possible, as there will most likely be a number of solo missions and unfortunately my collarbone plated 2 years plus ago still doesn't like too much weight on it...

I've been considering the Nemo Kunai, as it weighs only 2.1kg. Dislikes are the single entrance and minuscule vestibule though.

Alps Mountaineering have the Tasmanian 2, much cheaper than the above, but also 1.3kg heavier!

Plenty of options out in the market and extremely overwhelming, therefore hoping the resident gear heads here can assist.

I really like my Aldi tent. I bought it a few years ago for $50 (reduced from $70). Two person, two vestibules. Will do the job for me in the snow this winter.

MacPac minaret is awesome, but single entrance & small vestibule...

The more doors & the bigger the vestibule the more weight I guess.

I have a Coleman PhadX 3man tent that has a very generous vestibule, comes in a 2-man size that would be lighter.

Both the minaret & PhadX are combined fly & outer and you just whack poles through the fly. The PhadX is free standing, minaret needs min 4 pegs to stay up. Super convenient to erect in a storm - just throw your pack in and put poles up, peel off wet layers investibule.

Minaret looks like a nice weight at 2.4kg. Didn't see it on the MacPac.com.au site as not listed under Alpine tents, but does refer to Mountaineering in the blurb "The Minaret Tent is a trekking and mountaineering tent for the weight conscious. "

I have the Second Arrow. Being a full-time carer means it has had about two trips in 6 years. : (

But seems great so far!

I've used a Betamid which allows you to dig in a bit . . . The Megamid is probably better though IMHO
They now do light versions. Avg 680gms on the Beta, and avg 1.27kg/ min 1.05kg for the Mega . .

My Betamid sets up really quickly, and just about anywhere.. We got hit by a bit of harsh weather walking in the other and year and in a few minutes we were in the tent in a hollow behind a bolder brewing up ....

$750 for a minaret seems a bit steep and I don't really like tunnel tents....much prefer free-standing dome ones. I have a much older version of:

http://www.bogong.com.au/salewa-denali-ii-tent.html

which is still going strong after more than 10 years of use. In the snow you would probably want a small tarp inside or foot print.

Tarptent Moment Double Wall. I've used mine heaps on snow and in high winds. Weighs just over 1.2kgs. There's a lot of marketing hype around 4 season rated. I reckon anything that stands up in strong wind, is light and has vents up high will work fine.

If you want a very comfortable tent with a small sacrifice on weight look into the Exped Venus 2 Extreme. Mine has served me extremely well across all climates and I couldn't rave about it enough. It's very comfortable for two with two doors and two vestibules so everyone has their space. For solo trips it is luxury in terms of space but admittedly a bit overkill!

As other have mentioned have a look at the minaret and second arrow. It looks like they have reduced the weight of the second arrow down to under 2kg. Those tents will be quite tight for two plus gear but if solo is also on the cards I reckon they be a good balance between weight and space. Just be sure to lie down in one in the hop to be sure you can fit comfortably!

I'm using s Sierra Designs single skin 2 man tent with a vestibule. Works well in the snow here in OZ, is light weight, and is a value for money brand. Not convinced about single skin tents though in wet and moist conditions like in Tassie as they really do require a lot of ventilation, particularly if you like to cook in them!

Good luck with your purchase.

Simey,

Are you serious? I bought the same tent (for $70!) It is only suitable for Arapiles in Summer. Although the fabric quality and stitching is quite good it is only a 3 season tent at best. I suspect strong wind (as experienced in the Alps) would tear it and you 'a new one'

My 2 cents worth, JDB

p's I'm sure you'll be happy you got one sucker to respond

I completely endorse Sabu's comments, although the Venus is not super light, it is extremely easy to put up in a hurry, the down side is probably the number of snow pegs required. I also went for the PU coated rip-stop nylon (opposed to the siliconised nylon) which is not quite as water proof but probably a better all round 4 season tent

I am serious! I won't be pitching my Aldi Special on the summit of Bogong in a blizzard, but otherwise will be happy to use it. I agree it won't handle strong winds and heavy snow like some designs, but I will just be careful where I pitch it.

I have a second arrow i'm happy to sell, but the reason I am happy to sell it is because my not so short boyfriend thinks it is too small. It's great for one person, and fine for 2 small people and tolerable for a small person and a notsosmall person. It did a season or 2 in the french alps and a couple of tasmanian walks and it's always been bombproof. I'd be happy to keep using it if it was just me. It's been replaced with a venus 2 which is also a fantastic tent, super roomy, been through lots of foul weather with me as well, but the floor is not as robust as the second arrow. I haven't got the superlight one though, because the inner is completely mesh on that and I'd freeze.

Wendy,

I am interested in your tent (assuming Dalai isn't). Tried to PM you but your inbox is full.

All yours dave99.

I'm enjoying looking into all the suggestions but particularly keen on the sub 2kg options suggested. Like the idea of a local manufacturer - and notice the Wilderness Equipment have a Winter version of the Space 2 that comes in at 2kg and has two vestibules.

Martin, the hmg mid2 is awesome. I am not an owner but a mate is. 4 season and alpine pyramid tent that would also suit cycle touring

Anther vote for the Minaret - I've had mine for 10+ years and it's survived well through a number of big blows above the snowline. They are expensive at full price ($750) but they regularly go on sale at Macpac for much less. However...they are heavy at 2.4kg.

No one has mentioned the new lightweight version of the WT second arrow yet. It's ~1.8kg and should be just as stable as the minaret. That said - the floor rating is only rated to 5000mm and it's even more expensive than the full price minaret.
