I've always liked Mountain Equipment but considering most of them are in or near Kent St, you might as well just go and have a browse in all of the city ones.

Same, same for Canberra, if one is ever there...
It is often interesting to compare products and prices with the competition located in close proximity!

Mountain Equipment seems to be more of a niche climbing store, whereas the others are a bit more diverse in their targeted customers whether it's travel gear, hiking gear, etc. Although I hear Kathmandu sometimes has a sale on.

Thanks for the replies. Thought I'd check out the shops while I'm in the big smoke.

... I bet you won't find any LittleHammers there yet, as I hear the manufacturer is flat-chat keeping up with demand, let alone supplying stores with them yet.

Anther plus for mountain equipment. But if you want to talk about something in particular in any shop tell them you want to talk to the girl/bloke who knows there shit about what you,re after.

Only 4 stores on Kent St sell gear - Mountain Equipment; Mountain Design; Trek & Travel & Paddy Pallin.
Having known a few friends at several of the various stores - Mountain Equipment is definitely the best regarded - Trek & Travel is owned by the same person; I don't know the details but essentially he sounds like a climbing philanthropist. Mountain Equipment hire staff based on climbing experience - not retail background.
That said if you know what you are looking for shop around because ME only stock certain brands.
From memory Mountain Design carry Mammut; Paddy Pallin have a small but diverse set of gear with Scarpa Shoes.. ME; MD; T&T & PP all stock Black Diamond trad gear.
Anaconda also sell some gear, no idea the brands or range. The staff will definitely know less than those on Kent St.

Actually the manufacturer is mostly getting sunburnt and dumped on Sydney beaches!
