So as per the other thread, I'm looking to go to Tassie with the GF over summer. I was wondering what experiences people had in hiring campers in Australia? My only requirements are a double bed, a gas stove and a fridge.

I defaulted to Wicked and they quoted at $85 a day plus $6 for aircon+powersteering and $100 remote fee and 5% booking fee. At first glance that $85 per day looks pretty good but then loses it's shine after adding the extras. Are there other cheap options?

depends on how many days? 100 = $8500,,, you could buy a reasonle enough van for that then sell it after to recoup something...

Wicked have a pretty bad reputation, they are about the bottom of the barrel for campers...
Wendy had a thread like this a while back...
Things to consider:
Second battery is pretty much a must for the fridge; hybrid gas helps keep costs down..
Pop-top makes life much cushier - particularly in bad weather - Tassie is an island!
If you buy one, expect to do repairs on it. So the notion that you'll be able to sell it afterward must factor in several grand in repairs to the price.

Maybe put an as on gumtree/trading post or the like and see if anyone is willing to rent you their can for the holidays?

Wicked are shit unless you like spending your hols waiting around repair places.
Take maccas advice and buy/sell a van.
I did that in USA and made money!

Buy/Sell is definitely the way to go. have a look at gumtree, also you can do the rounds of the hostels where you can get a good deal off people leaving if you know what you are looking for.

+1 to Macca, DD, and ademmert posts.

An added benefit is bringing it back to the mainland and continuing your road trip!
