Having come out of hibernation, |'ve got a few holes in my rack to fill in - does anyone know if any of the stores have any gear on sale at the moment? It must be nearly that time of year, or have I missed the sales? I need another set of nuts and probably some cams...actually I probably need a few of everything, plus a harness and shoes for the new man I'm planning to turn into my belay slave ;o)

If you know anyone in Canada that would be willing to forward on packages for you then www.mec.ca/index

Our gear prices are hyper inflated compared to them. Even given the an exchange rate of about 1 - 0.94

Rgds,
Dom.

Don't forget that listed Canadian prices don't include state and federal taxes, which can total up to 15%, so while they are still unquestionably cheaper, the difference is less than it looks.

Jim

EDIT: my comments are in relation to Dom's suggestion of having someone in Canada forward the goods to you. You would presumably have to pay CANADIAN taxes on your items (their VAT/GST or whatever). Not sure if you could get this refunded if you carried the goods with you through customs, but I doubt you'd get it back if someone posted the goods to you.

If you bring in goods to Australia from overseas, if the value of the tax is less than $50 they will waive the fee. You can usually get the stores to mark the price down a little bit or send multiple packages. I know people that have brought in items such as motorycle leathers that have been worth $1-2k and havent been hit with taxes and duties so i think sometimes its a bit hit and miss on whether they catch you out on the expensive items.

some stuff in the UK is cheaper than here
http://www.rockrun.com/ and other shops
I have bought stuff in the UK cheaper than I could buy it here but not as cheap as it is in some other
countries
DMM stuff was cheaper and possibly wild country. Ropes and shoes I thought were cheaper but like here
there is a big range between different shops
I have also bought shoes mail order and been sent the wrong size which was a real pain.

A friend of mine recently looked into buying a moderate amount of gear directly from Black Diamond (US).
Initially it seemed much cheaper but when he took into account shipping and potential taxes as well as
the difficulty in returning defective items as well as the risks of damage or loss of the gear during shipping
it didnt seem so worthwhile. in the end he contacted steve from rock hardware and got a deal on the stuff.
it cost a little bit more but fact that there were no hassles or risks made it worthwhile.

I've had a look at sites from around the world and by the time you add it all up the risk isnt really worth it, I just bought a rope and draws from Rock hardware, Steve seems pretty helpful and gave me a good deal, Way safer than buying from overseas....

GST has been sitting at 7% in Canada since it's inception. I don't think it will be changing anytime soon.

Dunno if thats any help those who import.
