looking for skiis to fulfill 2 purposes- so compromise will be necessary. willing to listen to arguements as to why this may not be sensible!
downhill piste skiing- a bit
ski-mountaineering (so weight an issue)
height 1.78m (5'10'' in the old money)
weight 84kg
skill?? 20 yrs ago skied black with minimal style, not skied since!!!! used to use 200cm skis now thinking 180 but advised to consider 170. I am not proud any more and very happy with shorter skis.
I have seen some good value skis and bindings for sale 2nd hand but skis are 178cm....
should cope with both circumstances I am told if I fit an "alpine...??" binding. any comments re this and I am aware on this forum tha passions run high on the virtues/not of certain bindings.

I'm not trying to pass the buck - but have you tried posting at ski.com.au?

How many days per season will you be doing? If not that many then just get boots.

Get boots that fit you. Try them on at your local ski shop and then buy them at considerable discount from the US!!

Hire skis if you can as that way you'll always have close to the latest gear.

About 170 is a good length, you'll find skiing so much easier than 20 years ago due to the technology.

or try asking the outdoor experts at your local Aldi.

you want short skis, 170cm is plenty for your height, modern skis are shorter & fatter, with good sidecuts, the effect is much easier turning and control

your bigger decision is what kind of binding
from your requirements sounds like you want AT bindings and skins, or maybe just a downhill kit
