having been there myself only 2 months ago, I can appreciate the difficulty of the climb. it is very exposed, and while the climb itself is by no means technical, for your average bushwalker (which is what most visitors are) in stiff soled walking boots with little experience it is not hard to see that there have been fatalities in the area. There have been to my knowledge four people who have died on the summit attempt and others in the area, including at Stuart Saddle where a very young and fit man (mid-20s) died from hypothermia during a snowstorm - in the middle of summer. This is not an area to be underestimated. My condolensces to his family and wife. |
