Terrible news.
Even though what he did and I do are beyond worlds apart, he has always been an inspiration to me.
Very sad day.

This is extremely sad, and a total surprise. If it can happen to Ueli Steck, then it can happen to absolutely anyone climbing/mountaineering.

Reminds me of a quote that was pinned in Plateau Hut at Grand Plateau:

“Climb if you will, but remember that courage and strength are nought without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime. Do nothing in haste; look well to each step; and from the beginning think what may be the end.” Edward Whymper

RIP Ueli Steck.

Hey, that's my print out that I attached to the wall in Plateau Hut (for obvious reasons as Mt Cook has killed ALOT of people over the past 100 years!!!) the last time I climbed Mt Cook (2010 I think???)... always have a copy of it on my wall at home and find it is a good mantra to live by... risk is great, but needs to be kept in check.

Another one is:

" There are OLD mountaineers, and there are BOLD mountaineers....
But there aren't many OLD BOLD mountaineers!!! "

Climb safe everyone and rest in peace up there Ueli...!!! Will miss reading about your amazing adventures!!! R.I.P The Swiss Machine

Steck, what an inspiration! The amount of climbing he did in a year, exposure to unavoidable risks soloing in the mountains, would rival a lifetime of most climbers, I guess maybe not so surprising, but really shocking and sad :'(

Will Gadd's eulogy on facebook is worth a read. Gives a glimpse of the man behind the machine.

I had the same thoughts, feels like a very sobering reminder.

A total surprise? Really?

It's sad, Ueli came across as a super nice bloke. Get real though, if you think having world class fitness and skills allows you to do super risky stuff without any risk, you don't actually understand how the whole risk thing works.

I'd like to think that Alex Honnold might reflect on this.

In the end, it is a numbers game.....

I'm not a big fan of those chalk balls, I prefer it loose in my chalk bag;)

I was wasting time. Watching red bull tv. Ueli was on there talking about he wanted a chance to grow old. And about risk and some objectives being "worth it". I wonder if it was worth it?
