Little fall, big foot injury
6:15:26 PM
So 2 weeks ago I took a small fall (about 1.5m) around the back at araps at Campbell's kingdom crag. Don't recall the name of the climb.
It was dirty, I was cautious. Bill was belaying (he's innocent) and Tom was climbing just to my left. We both made a ledge about 20 up and 5 from next ledge.
Tom came right and went up no problem. This may have led to me underestimating next move. Gear was placed at face height with a draw. *Should have shortened or prepared to place something above so I didn't land on ledge.
Got up 2m and found to my skill level a dead end. Decided to down climb. While moving left hand down right ripped out of crack. Bloodied fingers but not the big issue. Landed both feet at the same time. But left foot landed on 2 levels barely 40mm difference. BANG. Knew I was gone instantly.
Rapped down (thanks bill), Tom cleaned up my anchor, and pauline helped carry gear out.
Tight bandage I walked out. At the car took a bucket of pain relief. At pines put on ice and drank beer. Beer was for the embarrassment of taking such a fall on an easy line.

The wash up. From many years of running including marathons and ultras I had stress fractures 2 years ago in the mid foot (Lysfranc) joint. So that instability has come back to haunt me. After the initial reduction in swelling, bruising and pain the ongoing is pain that barely allows walking. It sucks.

1. Place gear and avoid falls to ledges.
2. If you suffer mid foot pain at any time from any sport get it checked out. If you are diagnosed with plantar fasciitis make sure Lysfranc joint is not occurring at the same time.
3. Don't fall

Thanks to all at the pines who helped including Bigchris telling me to "harden up". Or was it "you suck".
Good climbing. Stay safe.

I blame Tom.

But seriously sometimes the smallest falls hurt the most, and worst part is you have no cool story to go with it ..wish you a speedy recovery.

Haha - I actually laughed when I read all of that :D

You should stick to climbing chimneys and overhangs ;)

On another note, do you want me to take Teags climbing?

She's down the beach all next week. Besides if she climbs with you ill be hearing "you suck" in stereo. I might take you up on the offer in a few weeks if I don't heal.

when you say mid foot pain,
i get a kinda tweaking pain in the mid underside of my foot once or twice a day,
kinda feels like a pinched nerve or momentarily stretched muscle

other than that i dont have any constant or on going foot pain..

should i be nervous

I'm sure podiatrists etc are lining up to answer.
My 2 cents worth. Treat as per plantar fasciitis BUT don't assume the one cause / treatment solves everything. Over the years I've had breaks, dislocations, tears etc.
severe mid foot pain don't ignore

hmm... i think i'll get it looked into...
thanks for posting up this thread, it may well save me some issues

Probably harden up. I've heard that one before myself
