Serioiusly WTF..canyoning in with that system coming in we had yesterday.....wasn't even like a freak storm or anything..it had been coming for a week.

A few facts...

He was dehydrated. That's what happens when you drink bad (creek) water and spend the next 24 hours vomiting.

He intended to do a single day canyon on the Saturday, when the weather was nowhere near as bad. Unfortunately his plan didn't eventuate and he spent the next two days trying to self-rescue in very poor weather. Only once he thought he had no other option did he set off the PLB.

Yes sounds epic. Respect to him for his effort of self rescue/reliance. My initial reactions were similar to those above. If you are out there for a couple of days on your own before you go the PLB then it hardly sounds like a foolish or frivilous use of the PLB.
