I am surprised on two counts.
1. That an experienced climber like JL actually did that to himself.
2. The degree of damage he managed to himself in a gym environment.

I wish him well with his recovery.

What a great opportunity to rekindle the ever popular "bowlines are bad, mmmkay" argument.

I'll start.

Bowlines are really bad for flossing your teeth

I don't know any unfinished knot that does the job. All knots are bad, and should be avoided.

A donation fund has been set up to help Long defray some of his out-of-pocket medical expenses??????

Universal healthcare is for communists. The only people who deserve proper healthcare are people with high paying secure jobs, or those popular enough to have fan bases and can raise the money through public charity. Average Joe Bloe with low paying or seasonal work doesn't deserve health care. That's the American way.

If it wasn't for the cheap gasoline, it would be hard to distinguish the U.S.A. from the third world. It has environmental pollution, political corruption, widespread gun ownership and gun-related violence, poor public health, and its hard to find anybody who speaks intelligible English.

Oh, and here was me thinking it is just the kind of $ (trendy pauperism or infamy?*), that goes with the notoriety of those 'who write the books'...
Since JL has written more than many climbers, God help the lesser climbing mortals like guidebook writers!
;-)

Maybe using a bowline voids any insurance cover.

(Edit : in reality US health system sucks)

Actually I much prefer to use bowlines for flossing my teeth, particularly as they are not very good for tying in with. Personally I prefer to wait until the bowline has loosened and fallen away from the climber's harness because of the difficulty of trying to floss with the rope still attached to the climber. Fortunately the regular episodes of bowlines coming undone means my teeth are in perfect condition.

After being hounded by ajfclark a year or two back about how immanent my demise was on account of trying in with a bowline; I acceded and used the vastly inferior rethreaded figure eight*. I got to climb with him again last week and lo and behold, he ties in with a bowline.

Next I going to find out he's riding a motorbike to the crag...

*On account of it being much harder to undo...

Looks like a single bowline in this image:

Adds Long: "A lot of people are down on the bowline, but the same thing would have happened with a trace-8. I just wasn't paying attention."

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!

Yup, turns out if you don't tie a knot and then weight the rope, very bad things™ happen.
