Anyone going to be in the South Island around Wanaka/Queenstown during Feb/Mar 2004? I am looking for climbing buddies :-)
Also, i'd be keen to hear from people who've been rockclimbing around that area. Best area's to visit, places to hook up with other climbers etc

I have climbed at Hospital Rocks in Wanaka. It offers shortish (under 15m) sport climbing on fairly crappy shale rock. The good clean routes are fun however and the bolting and location are nice. It dosn't compare in quality to say the Blue Mtns or Nowra. There is heaps of sub 23 sport routes to do along the road from Wanaka to Rasberry Flat (Aspiring) and you can easily hitchhike there form Wanaka. Generally my experiance of NZ rock is not that great. Fun for a few days but certianly no Arapiles.
See a pic of the area here

You should really try and get to Castle Hill outside Christchurch...amazing number of huge (and not so) limestone boulders sticking out of what must be a glacial valley...so beautiful...the setting itself is gorgeous...just bring some spare jocks for a few of the climbs, some are really frikking scary!

The climbing on the road to Aspiring is OK and the rock is pretty solid (short single pitch and increasingly bolted). I have climbed at "Roadside Attraction". Short Cut to Exposure and Aretnaphobia were both good. Check out areas on theCrag.com. I will hopefully be in the Aspiring region in Feb for some alpine stuff but don't have definite dates yet. I don't know why you'd leave Victoria for NZ to go rockclimbing alone!

Hi MrsNuffy, I will be in Wanaka around that time. I spent a fair bit of time climbing around there this year and last and know the area pretty well. There is a lot of climbing from grad 3 to grade 32 on generally good rock (below the snow line) with a lot of untapped potential especially if you are into alpine rock. You can reach me on the email above or ask at the Wanaka YHA where i think i'll be basing myself. Cheers, Mark
