Find Climbers In Your Area

Toprope buddies / Friday 9 June / Melbourne city?

Hi folks

I'm coming over from Adelaide to Melbourne for the week-end of 10-11 June to visit some friends.

I'd like to take the opportunity to try a Melbourne climbing gym. But my friends aren't climbers, and it wouldn't be fair to ask them to belay for me. So I'm looking to meet one or more climbers for a casual toprope on Friday 9 June afternoon, before I meet with my friends.

My plan is to arrive on Friday 9 June morning or midday, make my way to a gym, meet some people to climb for an hour or three, then go off to meet my friends at 6pm or so. My friends live in Southbank, so I'd prefer a gym in the city, if any.

As for my personal details, I've been climbing indoors for about 8 years. I've climbed up to grade 24, but am unfit at the moment, & pushing to get my ass up a 20. I thoroughly disapprove of outdoor climbing, since the approaches are not carpeted, and the climbs do not have c--ktail cabinets installed at the base. You can see further personal details at http://tc2.artspace.com if so inclined.

(a) Can someone suggest a suitable gym? (with good toproping, close to Southbank)

(b) Any takers to meet me there on Friday 9 June afternoon for a climb or three?

TIA,
Tim C

There are no roped climbign gyms within 10km of the CBD. The two gyms (CLiffhanger & Hard Rock) are
located in the outer suburbs of Altona and Nunawading - both take about 20mins to drive to from the
CBD. There is free bouldering at Burnley and pay (heated!) bouldering at Lactic Factory. Both these ares
are within a few kilomteres of the city - but you will still need a car to get there.

Closest climbing gym (as opposed to Bouldering gym) to the CBD is Cliffhanger , straight out over the Westgate bridge. It is supposedly accessable by public transport but includes a combination of train and bus.
The other easier option if a car isn't available is
Hardrock . Straight on a Lilydale / Belgrave line train to Nunawading and a very short walk from the station.

Sorry, can't help you there.

If you can't track a partner down, bouldering options all accessable by public transport and a short walk are.

Princess Bridge (St Kilda Rd) right in Southbank.
The new Burnley Wall, McConchie Reserve.

Both described in the Melbourne
guide.

The Lactic Factory is a brilliant bouldering gym, but is only open later in the afternoon / evening.

Ok, thanks dalai & neil for that information.

I'm really surprised. I assumed that melbourne would have several gyms in easy distance of the city - if not actually *in* the city! So much for wild assumptions :-)

I saw on the web about the gym at Verve apartments in the city. Is that not open yet? Or did that plan go down the gurgler?

I'd be happy to taxi to a gym, but not unless I had a partner already lined up. If anyone else reads this & is interested, please reply in this thread, I'll keep my eye on it for the next few days. I'll even pay your entrance fee! (seriously)

Cheers,
Tim C

Verve is still under construction.

Of the two gyms closer to the CBD. The Mill in Collingwood closed to make way for apartments and Victoria Ranges in Flemington burnt down.

Best of luck finding a partner for the afternoon.
