Mexican who has been out of Oz for two years and has landed north of the border!
Can anyone help out with tips for good gyms/places to find climbing partners/people in need of climbing partners?

climbfit in st leonards is probably the most popular gym. Otherwise, if you're willing to make the journey then head up to the glen/shipley upper/porters pass - you're bound to find someone there!
take!

As above, plus climbing gym at St Peters (South of Sydney/Newtown) is also a great gym.
Also check out bouldering websites for popular locations Balkans, Sissy, etc...

It is interesting to note Climbfit and the Glen / Shipley /Porters Pass as a place to meet climbers. My experience is that if you go to Climbfit and the afore mentioned climbing areas you will meet the same people. And they are usually standing in the same order.
I have often referred to these areas as Climbfit West. And of course there is always Climbfit South ( more popular in the summer) Thompsons Point of course.

check out sydneyclimbing.com for local crags.

check out cragx.org for climbing partners.

If you are keen there is a group of us that climb locally after work once or twice a week after work. Then hit the Blueys on weekends.

the ledge is pretty sociable as well, its a much smaller gym & probably a good way to meet up with other climbers (its at usyd). i live pretty close to the st peters gym but to be honest i'm not the biggest fan of the routes there, i even consider trekking out to climb fit instead. i find the routes are either just long & strenuous or quite random, if you're into more technical routes i'd probably go for st leonards or the ledge instead, but apparently the lead routes are quite good (haven't done them).

I'd have to agree! on the other hand, you're sure to find somebody there, rain hail or shine...

Coff coff, splutter splutter...them's fightin words...you're dissin my local gym so I gotta reply! Both Climbfit and the ledge are definitely good but there's no problems with the route setting at St Peters. How long since you've been?...when they first opened in the new place a lot of the routes seemed hastily set and it took them months to get around to replacing them all (there's a lot of walls). But now there's heaps of good stuff and new routes most weeks. Good regulars and atmosphere too (at least Tuesdays + Thursdays).

nb most of the lead routes are shut at the moment due to renos/expansions :(

(disclaimer: don't have any vested interest in SICG other than it's my local)

yes i don't have any vested interest in any of them either, in fact it would be great if i liked the climbs at st p's more..

i just find i'm very rarely inspired to want to work a route & tick it off because it doesn't feel like there's a nice way to do it, the routes feel like the moves are obvious and its just a question of how long you can hang on for. i much prefer routes you have to think about and have to figure out but when you suss it out you can do it in an elegant & efficient way. to me the routes there just feel like they're going to be awkward no matter how you do them. i think for a start they should get more positive holds and arrange them in more interesting ways that feel nice to climb instead of just front on forearm pumpers.

Why does this sound (to me), like you need to get out on real rock more?
:)

hmmm...that's exactly what St Peters does seem to do well, at least for me. Most of the routes do feel like puzzles that do have a solution. Same climbs...different opinions.

ahhh...we're not even arguing over real climbing.

do i hear talk about gyms.

SICG is long hard and pumpy with every different hold imaginable, thus creating the pump factor fight through it and soon you will be the endurance king.
then you have the leading and since not many people lead it's like having the whole gym to yourself, whats better than having climb after climb that you dont have to wait for.

CLIMB FIT since it doesn't have the height it has more problems suited to the bouldering people hard moves that you do fast, not to get pumped so you last for the whole 6m of climbing very technical climbing that you must study well from the ground to have the best chance of finishing the climb.

All gyms are great i dont think there is one better than other.
Even if there was i would still make my way around to all as a do every week, and have done for the last 2 years.
I do think this has made me alot stronger as i dont stop climbing at one place because it's not suited to me.
If i struggle at one gym more than the others i will usaully go there more to improve on that style of climbing.
