Looking for climbers on backpacking holiday

Hi folks,

I'm looking to hook up with some climbers during a backpacking holiday this month. I'm flying from the UK and travelling light so will only have basic gear - harness, shoes, belay plate, crabs and chalk bag. Am competent at bouldering/sport/single pitch trad climbing. Landing in Melbourne on 10th March and looking to head out to Mt.Arapiles on the 11th or 12th (pretty flexible at the moment). Thinking of hiring a car or camper to get there but not yet decided if I'm going to camp or find a hostel yet. Will be heading back to Melbourne by the 14th as I'm then flying to Cairns.

Anyone heading out to the crags around about the same time from Melbourne and up for sharing transport/hooking up? Best to camp or use a hostel? Any tips on where to meet climbers near the crags?

It's my first time in Australia and am totally psyched!

Camp at the Pines, the main campground at Mt. Arapilies. You will likely find all the climbing partners you need there as well.

The easiest way to get there is to hire a car. The cheapest would be to catch a train Melbourne to Ararat, a bus onto Horsham, and then a bus or hitch hike out to the mount.

Yep if you're only heading to araps then its very easy to get public transport all the way there. Camping is by far the best option at Araps and you'll meet plenty of people to climb with by doing so.

Cheers guys. Yeah, am pretty much just heading out to Arapiles for few days and then back to Melbourne. Was going to hire a camper which would solve the issue of transport and accommodation, but not sure whether camper vans are allowed at the pines? Unless public transport is easy and there's somewhere I can pick up a tent and supplies dirt cheap!

Yep there are often camper vans there so you wouldn't be out of place. The catch is there are no powered sites.

Rays Outdoors is probably the go for cheap and cheerful camping kit.
