Hi,
I'll visit Melbourne in August/September for a conference and planned to enjoy climbing for a few days/weeks after work.
I'd be gratefull for any help on how to find climbing partner for indoor climbing and a guide for rock climbing, or any other suggestions.
My indoor level: leading up to 6a/6a+, toprope up to 6c.
On real-rock I avoid leading. Toprope up to 6a. Granit prefered, so far.
Would be great to find people for climbing activities in September.
Cheers,
Tanja (from Munich)

You climb well enough, stop avoiding leading.

If you want to climb indoor during the week, find the Melbourne Rock climbing Meetup group. Outdoors, drop the Victorian Climbing Club a line.
Granite preferred?! Slabs or cracks?

Wie gehts Tanja,
I'm afraid you may find the indoor climbing disappointing compared to what you are used to in Europe. Still it is climbing yes. Nor do we have inner city crags for outdoor climbing in Melbourne.
The best 'local' outdoor climbing is on the order of an hour's drive from town (more or less irrespective of which crag you think is the best). Which for most people makes it better suited as a day trip on the weekend than after work. It also means having access to a car is highly advantageous.
Many of these area's are protected by a mixture of traditional gear and bolts, often with removable hangers.
The chockstone website has some useful guide book information, otherwise Rockclimbs Around Melbourne is the best printed guide.
All of the best climbing in our state is further afield though, at Arapilies, the Grampians or Mt Buffalo, and if you have more time (at least a weekend) would be worth the journey.
best,

@ pecheur: Thanks for the contact suggestions. Definitivily cracks (friendly ones)
@ phillipivan: The book seems to be promising, I just ordered it. Thanks for all the place names. An entire week for climbing is already planed for my visit and I can get around a bit further from Melbourne.

Hallo Tanja,
Steve
