Hello Everyone,
This is a bit of a cheeky shot in the dark, but myself and partner, Greg, will be heading towards the Melbourne area around the 20th March 2011 (arrive in Sydney on the 15th) and were wondering if any of you out there would like to team up with us and show off some of your best local climbing sites? I''m particuarly keen on sampling The Arrapiles as I have heard so many people tell me it''s the best place they have ever climbed at. Unfortunatelly, because of keeping the weight down we have no trad or camping gear with us. What we do have, however, is a 60m single rope, 10 quickdraws, a couple of slings and personal kit (harness and rock boots) and a sense of humour. We have no camping gear except a stove and 4 season sleeping bags! We''ve only got about two weeks in Oz so it''s a bit of a flying visit (dep from Melbourne on around the 27/28 March). We''re not particuarly hard climbers, but do lead British VS (trad) and French sport 6A, but are willing to have a go. Do check us out on our blog so you can check out what you could be letting yourself in for :) www.fourcontinentsandtworucksacs,blogspot.com
Of course we will share any costs (petrol/food) and would love to reciprocate the favour in the hills and mountains of the UK.
Would love to hear from you,
Liz.

From melbourne you can get the train and bus from Southern cross station for about $28 to Horsham - from there go to safeway get food - go opposite safeway and hitch to either Natimuk or the mount - this won't be difficult.

i can lend you a tent. pm me nearer the time and i'll send you my no.
you won't have a problem finding people to climb with at the pines. Bring mozzie repellant you will most certainly need it with your tasty english skin. x

For your (brief) stay in Sydney, you could sample some of the climbing in the Blue Mountains, or to the south in Nowra. A lot more opportunities for sport climbing - F6a is about an Aus 19. (VS is the Aus 14-16 range for when you get to Arapiles).

Only negative about climbing is Aus is the occasionally oppressive heat. Just need to seek out a crag that avoids the afternoon sunshine.

Enjoy Arapiles. Haven't made it there myself yet, though it's on the cards for this Easter.

Make sure you pack that as you'll need it if you want to climb low grade sport climbing in Victoria

Very useful things for Australia in March, those 4 season sleeping bags. I'd probably bring a second one each, just in case we get a cold snap :-P

Hi, I live 10 minutes from Sydney airport and have a spare tent and a massive loaner trad rack (heavy wires, hexes, and cams from the 80's and 90s tho). Can also sandbag in the Blueys. Weather should be great that time of year.

Dont forget to give them advice on hoop snakes and drop bears. They are really active this time of year and especially after the rain!!

I still haven't seen a drop bear but those hoop snakes are scary - best to keep your distance. I also scared a spider in my wash basket this morning... x

Howdy - I also have some spare camping gear (but no loan rack!) you can loan when in Victoria. I live in Brunswick, not far from the airport. Happy to loan you some climbing guides and show you a bunch of photos, and take you out for a beer if you have time when you land. Also happy for you to crash in the back yard in a tent (which I can loan you) for a night.

Don't scare them off before they get here! They took our Ashes remember!

Seriously though, don't worry, our pet kangaroos will keep the nasties away. And then you could always use your boomerangs and spears too

Don't worry about all the things that bite and sting, as just about everything does. Best to stay inside the pub, where you will have to drink cold beer.

Hey, big thanks everyone for the really useful info and the offer of gear. We'll contact you directly, probably at the end of Feb/beg March in order to take up your offers.
When you say the weather will be good, what kind of temperatures are we talking about? We've just spent 3 months in the freezer called Nepal, had our arses burnt in Thailand and are now in much cooler Northern Vietnam hoping to sample some rock here soon.

So, I had my mate Ed over from Devon at the end of March-middle of April, 2 yrs ago. We had 19 days in a row of sunshine, no clouds, gentle breeze, and 18-20 degree maximum..........he was rather astounded, to say the least!

Coming from Old Blighty, you probably have no concept of what perfect climbing weather actually is, but perfect is what's generally expected at araps in autumn ;)

Now, after saying all that, its been a pretty wierd and unique summer.......might be wise to expect a slightly less than ideal autumn.....also, you're going a smidge early, might still be bastard hot at the end of Feb (coming from Old Blighty, you probably have no concept of what bastard hot.....etc, etc)

Araps cliffs mostly get morning sun and arvo shade; the heat problem is solved by drinking in the pub till after lunch then climbing in the shade till dark (still gives you 7 or so hours of tipsy climbing/day)

Hope that helps, make sure to take Mike up on his offer of a Blueys tour, he'll show you a good time

Edit; just reread that. You're contacting folk in Feb, coming middle of March, perfect timing!

Oh, I nearly forgot.......if you found yourself getting lobstered in Thailand, better brace your skin for the photon storm which awaits (bit like Thailand, but minus the Ozone).

You're gonna get burnt so bad it'll scare you.................don't say you weren't warned!

Hi. If you're interested or find the time for something in between Arapiles and the Blueys, I live near Mt Buffalo in Vic's NE. Buffalo's another nice climbing area and different again to the other two. I can lend a bit of camping and trad gear and or head up for a day trip or two. PM me if you're keen. Regards, Porter.

Buffalo is great option for a trip breaker. It's beautiful and there are a few good climbs (avoid cracks tho)
