Just wondering (morphed to) DUNNS SWAMP

I was just wondering whether anyone out there is actually doing any climbing, because it seems this forum has degenerated of late into being filled with very low-grade fireside drivel usually reserved for the five minutes before the last two people go to bed, everyone else having passed out due to the inactivity of sitting around drinking way too much. All the humour and bravado has gone, and now the two people are sitting there struggling to communicate to eachother that they are considering whether to put another log on.

Can someone please post something vaguely climbing related?

Perhaps I can start:

Having done no climbing for ages I went out to Camels Hump on Sunday with a beginner and a couple of friends. We did Grey Arete (fun, easy), Boogie (fun, harder) and Wishful thinking (fun, pretty easy). The beginners loved it and the weather was fantastic. There were a few other people there having fun as well.

What a crap TR.

I wouldn't say it's a crap TR - at least it's a report! I unfortunately don't have much to say at this stage. I've been too busy with work and moving to NSW to go climbing. However, I did manage to check out Mt Boyce in the Blueys about a month ago. Did a couple of nice easy climbs (can't remember their names). I also did a bit of bouldering on the northern beaches 2 weeks ago. AND....I'm planning on taking some time off just after Easter to go back to the Blueys - have my sight set on Upper Shipley. Will post a TR after that.

On another note - I have just moved to a place called Rylstone. I live on top of Nullo Mountain. There are some really interesting rock formations around here (pagodas I think they're called). I'm looking forward to checking these out in the near future.

Rylstone? Wow... (wonder what you do for income to live there).

Go for a trip down the road to Glen Davis. The rock appears to be accessed by private property, but appears a bit more solid than that you see along the GD - Capertee Rd.
It is on my hit list this Autumn to drive to Capertee, cycle the Castlereagh Hwy to Rylstone - Glen Davis - Capertee in a day.
Creating a cycling hit list and wondering about the quality of distant multi-pitch rock is so much more easier on the body than actually climbing rock.

Yes.....not much to do in Rylstone and surrounds work wise. We live on 200 acres at the top of Nullo Mountain and own/run an accommodation business.....studio cabins through to larger cottage style accommodation. We just recently had 40 American students and facilitators (Koori elders) up here for a week studying Aboriginal culture and history of the area. It was really interesting. We also run a couple of other businesses on the side.

Will have to get to Glen Davis - I'll put it on my list. Good luck with your cycling list - sounds like too much hard work to me. I'm not good at hills.

Does that tickle your fancy?

Write something yourself if your bored. Make it up. Embellish an old story - never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Awesome evening at Lost World bangor with Bundya nd Ryan after work, 4 till mozzie o'clock at 7,
Threw myself at Fun and Danger 23, Eudomonia 23, and tried Keep off the Grass with the new direct start (24 or 25) , didn't really do anything except be amazed at how pumpy an overhanging slab can be.

Having done my first multipitch climb last week when I was in NZ I'm really interested in doing more here in Aus. I know Speigels out at the Cathedrals is one recommended for a good beginner multipitch.

Anyone got any favourite multipitch climbs at any level so I can start a hit list?

Hey Li - have you had a chance to see if there is any deep water solo potential at Dunns Swamp?

Search on Google pics to get an idea of what it looks like, and it's out your way somewhere

1st pitch of Speigels is a bit run out but as long as it's not at your limit it probably qualifies. From what I remember the last pitch is nothing to write home about. You can either wander up a vegetated gully with some gear or run it out on the easy slab face. Middle pitch is good though.

Anything with stars at Arapiles, Green Singer was the last one I did which was very good.

Sparrow at Tenneriffe is ok on a day trip from Melbourne (granite slab with carrots/some gear may be a bit run out). I think it's 13

I'll have to wait a few months until I can get back out there as the stork is about to visit me. I'm building a woodie in the garage instead.

So staying on topic and talking about recent climbing escapades and also in reply to Pommy and Li in discussing Rylstone and Dunns Swamp in particular all I can say is ( and I was really trying not to broad cast this in the hope I would get back there to record some of the routes we ticked but ) .......

THE DEEP WATER SOLOEING AT DUNNS SWAMP IS FREAKING AMAZING

A friend of mine organised a trip and we went out there in January for a long weekend - I reckon between 8 of us we ticked maybe 10 - 12 routes over 3 or 4 sections where the water is deep enough. Routes ranged from easy 15's ad 16 ( if you can even grad DWS like this ) to some more solid 21 / 22 which were actually more like 19's with V3 boulder move thrown in the middle.

I reckon depending on your boldness and the water level there would be easily the same again and possible more if you had the time.

There was lots of chossy rock and the lte easy grade climbs becoming harder as holds brake half way, instead of writing too much more why dont you have look for your self.

Oh and btw the road between Rystone and Dunns swamp is covered in boulders absolutely crying out for some one to climb

What's an overhanging slab? I though a slab was the opposite of overhanging?
