Gum trees? Oh thats right, they had bushfires last season didn't they, so scratch that.
On a more serious note (though I am not at all knowedgeable of that area), the phrase "East face of Mt Cobbler" seems to ring vague memory bells ...
If it is the mountain I am thinking of then I have viewed it from afar with binoculars and it had an escarpment on its east side.
It could be an adventure. Good luck.

... that could also be an adventure with the electoral commission if you managed to get onto the voting roll? ...

If it's the same conglomerate as that at the nearby impressive looking Paradise falls, an 'adventure' * it will be!

Neil,
If I remember right, it's reasonably compact sandstone, under vertical in the summit. It's not loose rubbish like Paradise Falls congomerate. I don't think it will really be your sort of thing.

Having worked in that area for over a year, I would only recommend climbing if:
a) you are sick of living and want to die in a beautiful semi-remote location;
b) you can't find any decent rock anywhere else;
c) you are practicing for climbing in the Dolomites; or
d) you want to give deer hunters a novelty target.
The rock is blobby conglomerate and is not well consolidated. A lead fall may creating more than a plummeting climber.
Dandongadale Falls are the highest falls in Victoria, and will be pumping this time of year. You will find SFA about them on the net. The roads will be getting wet and slippery, so if you wanted to go up to the lake you would need 4WD, and possibly a chainsaw. The back roads from Buller are closed now, so access is only from the King Valley side.
If you want more current info ring PV on 131963 and ask for the Whitfield office.

Thanks for your recommendations Steve. As none of them are applicable at present I think I'll give the falls a miss for now ;-)
