New chains on Alis

The Bolting Fairies have replaced the chains on Ali's descent and added a new rap station at the start (top) of this, so one can rap down Ali's to the final downclimb section now with a single 50m rope. A 60 rope will get you within a few metres of the deck.

Having been shown the old chains, I was pretty shocked at their condition - down to about 1.5mm in some of the links.

Well done and many thanks to Mr._______ for doing this.

I haven’t had a look yet, but I understand that one section of chain was extended a bit to cover that little
step down onto the polished block at about half height. Can anyone confirm?

Members of the Safer Cliffs Victoria forum have known the details about this for a few weeks now. SCV
is collecting funds to donate to this replacment - please get in contact with them if you'd like to add to the
collection!

Yeah G,day Ed, the chains were extended at the start, to cover the polished step up, and at the top of
that same section to cover the move around onto easier ground, and make the down climb safer.
I did the same thing on the upper section, the main reason was that the original carrot bolts were
replaced, with stainles expansion bolts by malcom matheson, these were still in quite good shape ,but
are 8 years old ,so my reasoning was that if I placed a new bolt at the begining and end of each run of
continuous chain, then if an old bolt should eventually fail, the whole system would hold together
I hope that clears things up for you......the bomb

What sort of costs are realised through the rebolting processes?

More specifically, how expensive is it to overhaul your standard rap chain set up at Arapiles?

A really basic guess would be about $7 - $10 a bolt. An average sport route costs about $70 to re-bolt.

Alis was not your standard rap chain, it was a Via Ferata of sorts and as such needed alot of work and
material's. I spent $130 on chain, 6 new true bolts, about 17 new hanger plates, and 2x 319 (stronger
than 316) stainless U bolts, and glue, with heavy duty chain & 2 steel locking gates, plus the repairs on
my drill,(have not recieved the final invoice for that little puppy yet. Altogether about $350/$400. I'm not
complaining!.I am more than happy to cover those costs, just thought I'd clear up any confusion as to
wether it was a"standard rap chain set up"...the bomb

How do I go about doing this? I'm all for doing my bit. Heaven knows I'm extremely greatful for quality chains whenever I use them (getting down of D-Minor, Castle Crag, and Ali's would not be much fun without the chains).

Who makes up SCV? Volunteers?
