I know... Arapiles is the best crag in NZ, but I'd like to know more.

I've got a couple of trips planned for NZ over the coming months. I'll be going to both north and south islands. There is a bit of info on the net about crags ect, but I want to know which ones are the best and actually worth the effort. Castle Hill and the Darrens are on my radar, but if anyone has an info on some other good areas, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

If you are flying into Auckland come have a quarry bash with us. Otherwise, well, it depends what sort of grade/style you are after.

Great, thanks guys.

I will be flying into Auckland in March! And coming from Perth, I suppose I have a thing for quarries :P

I climb up to grade 27, so anything up to that range, trad or sport is good. I am more interested in climbing classics and don't care too much about grades.

Climbing at Sebastapol Bluff at Mt Cook Village was really good fun. I could not wipe the smile off my face. Bolted, amazing views of the big mountains and cruisy walk in and rap off.

Also some fun clipping down in the valley at Wanaka.

I had a great time sport climbing in Wanaka on what was originally meant to be a ski trip last month. There's heaps of easily accessible, good quality stuff to do, with crags for pretty much any type of weather. The location is beautiful too. Another thing that looked stunning, although we didn't get round to climbing it, is the Sundial near Queenstown.

At the risk of hijacking the thread, does anyone also have any tips for must-do, easy-ish alpine stuff on the south island? Ideally stuff that doesn't require helicopter access and is mostly rock based. The Bowen-Allen corner and the north buttress of Sabre Peak are good examples of the sort of things we're after. Some stuff further east could be handy too, in case the weather is crap in the Darrans.

Cheers!

Thanks!

I'm doing some easy alpine stuff too. I think Mt Brewster is on the list because it has a bit of rock at the top. I'm going with a mate who knows all the places so I haven't done much research. But perhaps check out Mt Brewster.
