Me and Ingvar going to climb the Salathe in September. Anyone got advice on best/cheapest way of getting from San Francisco to Yosemite. Looked up Amtrack trains but there is no checked luggage facility. Various bus services offer a $95 one way trip. Any other suggestions?

we have always hired a car but you could look into the putting a message US climbing forums for people heading out that way from San Fran.

We met a few people in the Valley that car pool from the nearby cities

Hire a car, it's 'Merica. It's not to pricy, the hire companies don't care what you do to them and if you get a sudden yen to go to tuolumne or eastside sierra you have wheels. Also shopping in the valley is not the cheapest.

It's worth remembering with Amtrak that "no checked baggage" is not the same as with airlines. It just means you can't check bags into the baggage car. You can "carry on" two bags up to 23 kg each, and I've never seen anyone weigh a bag on a train! (I suppose they might if it "looks" huge.) For that matter I've never seen anyone enforce the two bag limit on a train, but the bus part of the trip may affect that in this case.

SF to Yosemite for US$38 it seems like a pretty good deal (assuming you can't find a car ride with someone, and that you're happy to buy a non-flexible ticket).

Gerry. I will be arriving on the 5th in San Fran and heading to Yosemite. When are you arriving in San Fran?

PM for discussion if you want.

5th-7th of September is Labor Day weekend. That would be a fun weekend to arrive in Yosemite for the full experience (not).

Hmmm... I didn't know that. Thanks! Hopefully the crowds will be less at the Meadows...

(Last time I was there I thankfully avoided the "full" experience. The weather remained good all through October and into early November. Cold but crowd free.)

Public holiday weekends in the big National Parks in the US are unbelievable. It's probably not a bad weekend to be in SanFrancisco.

I was in Yosemite on memorial day, with out realising what that meant and the crowds were phenomenal, but really only in the carparks and shops, 500m up any track was fine. Driving out was insane though, the tail back was from half way to el portal to the main carpark.

Amtrak + bus into the valley is fine even when carrying a biggish kit. The main hassle is the time you arrive in the valley. Assuming you are planning on staying in Camp 4, there will be no space, so you'll have to go sleep in the woods for the first night (or make friends quickly) and then join the line up at sparrow's fart the next morning. If you have your room at the Awahnee all booked then no probs.

Its really easy. You just get a greyhound to mercede and then there is a little bus from there direct to yosemite. They tell you what to do at the airport. If just going to valley no need for car. You can take as much luggage as you can drag around with you. Keep something warm out for te bus. They make them freezing so you don't vomit.

September in the Valley can still be bluddy hot. I'd strongly suggest heading up to Tuolumne instead - it's heaven up there.
