Good crags for kids to climb

Hi All,

Taking my young cousins away for a weekend in the Gramps in April.
With Summerday Valley closed, does anyone have any suggestions of good crags with easy routes, access etc that might be good for setting up some top ropes?

The Watchtower is 2 minutes from the road and the car park is 1 minute from Halls Gap. Toprope accessible and handful of reasonable climbs in the mid-teens.

Maybe Lookout Point Wall, just down from the Sundial Parking area.

How young phil? good little top roping area at Mountain lion for younger ones. Long drive down there, but short walk in.

+1 for Mountain Lion. The descent is a pain so they will be best off abseiling. That should make them happy.

Thanks guys. Kids are 5-10 years old. Don't remember there being much at the watchtower in the 10-15 grade range.

Araps could be a better idea but is still a reasonable drive from halls gap Mountain lion could be pain as I'm not convinced of my cousins people mover getting along those roads.

There's stuff on TheCrag. There's also a draft guide to the Wonderland area floating aout which might be slightly more useful. I can email you a copy if you want.

People mover from Halls Gap should be no problem. I remember it being basically good dirt once off the asphalt, with a short walk in.

I have a ton of up-to-date info on the Halls Gap area. There are more choices than you could imagine.

Paddy Castle would be my recommendation. 20-25min drive from HG but a very short walk in. Single pitch routes from grade 7 and up.
I can send you a draft.
Closer to HG: I hear Budja Budja is good but I haven't found it yet (!).

Crock Wall is also good but a half-hour walk up Mackeys Peak to get there. There's now a new rap station there to make access easier.
I've also taken my 6yo into Point Sunshine, small bush bash but that seemed to add to the experience for her.

Agree, there's not much good stuff at the Watchtower at lower grades.

Somewhere behind Mt Ida, across the creek from Halls Gap, east side of the valley.

(I have directions to it, but have yet to match up the directions with the crag after 2 reconnaissances. I'm fairly sure I know where it is now.)

Budja Budja is VERY easy to find. Just follow the directions on the Crag site. It is only 200m from the track and someone has recently cairned the track in. It doesn't really have any climbing below grade 16 however.

Thinking of heading down to Mountain Lion with my kids in the next few months. Are there any good bush camping sites down that way?
