VIC Arapiles Bard Buttress (General) (General) [ Arapiles Guide | Arapiles Images ]

Big block off Bard
9:56:13 PM
Apparently a huge block has come off Bard. Anyone know the details?
One of the flakes from the first pitch or the big detached thing in the groove on pitch 3?

Either one of those options would have given the leader a helluva scare!
Assuming noone got hurt, it would have been bloody speccy to watch! :-)

Near the top of the top pitch, a little to the left? There was a big rockin' widowmaker up there last time I was in the area (about 3 years ago).

What's the story?

Was this in April? If so.....I was beneath it. The lingering explosive smell was strong. Was a tad scary and was pissed as I thought it was a trundle. Had been up there barefoot and didnt recall anything unavoidable.....would love to hear about that one as it was alot of rock!

Stuff off Bard was in last few days. Had a quick look there this evening. Not obvious where it had come off from but there are some decent size blocks and divots on the ground. From the impact marks on the slab I would guess from quite high up but not sure.

I think this big block that was jammed in the first pitch flakes has gone but I may well be wrong. The impact mark on the slab doesn't seem to match though.

When we were down over easter we did Tony's Route. Grantoss was seconding up the top pitch of Bard and bearhugged that big wobble block 5m below the top of the whole buttress (same one prb mentioned). Apparently he and the block began tipping backwards as his sphincter puckered itself inside out. Luckily the thing didn't overbalance, but he still arrived at the belay with an "I see dead people" face.....although, given that he was on toprope, things probably would have been fine even if the block had let go.

Anyway, we momentarily contemplated trundling the thing, but that would have required one of us to go down and clear the area, and it was getting late and we had beers in the esky, know.

Cool story Hansel;) I reckon Daniel may have been thinking a similar thing, "I'm on top rope, yay. What could possibly go wrong?"

After speaking to the guy that pulled it off (Richard seconding the leader) It sounds like it was the widowmaker near the very top. He said there was a fair bit of moss around and wasn't sure if he was a bit off route too.

Bard and a fair bit of moss don't go together so he was certainly a bit off route. Incredibly lucky nonone was below.
I am obviously mistaken about the flake down the bottom.

Mmmm, it was maybe 2m left of where I normally top out Kieran, not really off route. It's the block which had the huge chalked X for years (at least that's the one which Grantoss wobbled on, I assume it's the one which fell off)

well thank fkng god that this didn't happen in the glue mountains - the bloody seppos would be crowd sourcing donations to haul and glue the block back up "to preserve the character of the route".
