Climbing at Krabi

Hi,

I'm fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be able to do a few days climbing in Thailand mid Jan, but my partner has no interest in climbing. We're staying in Krabi, does anyone know of a reputable climbing company in the area, or is it just better to bring some gear and head down to the local crags and hope I can team up with someone.

I was very disappointed with the quality of the "guides" there. If you are a strong climber, you might get lucky with a good 1-on-1 partner, but if you climb easy grades only, they will restrict you to the tourist hell walls. Personally I'd be trying to find a partner online through international climbing forums.

ok - thanks. I usually don't get out much, but can usually lead around 20 and follow up to 23, after (and sometimes before) that it gets pretty ugly and everyone's embrassed.

I had good luck with King Climbers (Railay east) one January during a stopover on the way back from Europe.
I took up a half-day intro but made it clear I was experienced. There were two other Canadians in my group, plus one instructor, who was happy to let me lead everything and just play belayer for the day. I got to lead up to about 6b+ which about as good as it gets for me, the Canadians kinda lost interest early and I was trashed enough by lunchtime to want to go and play by the pool in the afternoon.

6b+ what? I found 6b+ around grade 20, you lead much harder than that Steve.

From chatting to a couple of the guides they are aimed at the newbie market and I suspect the problem with doing harder routes is that a lot of them aren't super strong climbers themselves so if you have to bail they can't necessarily climb up to get the gear.

maybe just head out on a dws trip, that way you can climb and your partner gets a boat cruise and a laugh at you when you climbed higher than you wished come jump/fall off time

If you are a safe belayer and friendly, you should be able to hook up with some climbers and play with them. Just head to the base of the wall and ask around.

Whenever my wife climb there, we always adopt a couple climbers. Sometime singles, other time partners. Pretty friendly scene.

John there are few of us heading out there in Jan. I will be there from the mid Dec till mid Jan and I believe Bundy is also heading out mid Jan also. There are always people to climb with if you hang at Tonsai and get chatting,

Climbed with a guide from King Climbers last week for a couple of days. His name was Gom if you want to ask for him by name. He was experienced, safe and friendly, and King seems to have a good name. It suited me to hire him as a private guide rather than join a course. Most people on courses seemed to be thrill-seeking beginners.

There are several climbing companies at Railay/Tonsai. I saw nothing from guides that really concerned me but suspect they are more used to dealing with beginners than experienced climbers, hence why I was a bit selective and wanted someone with experience. King Climbers are now located in the Walking Street on Railay West.

I was also with my non-climbing partner and decided to carry no gear expect boots, harness and chalk bag. I also took a couple of screw gates and an ATC that I used when belaying, though climbing company would have provided a belay device.
