Bendigo bouldering (mcivor highway)
10:05:02 PM
Hi there. Im a 16 yr old from bendigo starting to get into climbing and was wondering weather the bouldering on mcivor highway under the bridge was any good/ worth the 12k round trip on a bike?

11:40:39 PM
I've never climbed there but will ask you this; are there any rocks closer to you than this one? If not than I'd get your froth beard on (i.e. get stoked) and pedal away. You'll develop cardio and froth fitness, both of which are useful to a new climber;)

I used to climb Melton Creek just to touch rock and maintain my stoke. Now I have a pet rock and spend too much time on Chockstone;)

Hey Ordie - Bouldering under the Mcivor Highway bridge is a great training venue and definitely worth the ride of 12km! It is great for endurance - The holds may seem a bit slippery, sharp and hard at first but persist and it gets easier. Practice traversing along both walls and aim to be really precise and delicate with your feet placements. The more you go the better a climber you will become.

There is also some really sweet bouldering at Mt Alexander which if you get the chance you should check out.

Yea i dont really have a problem with riding anyway since i do a hell of a lot more than 12k on a regular basis (its my sport of choice) But not really other then Mt Alex and the local gym thats only open from 5-7 on weeknights. Although i think there's a bouldering wall at Latrobe uni but i dont think they would like a 16 year old using their wall. So i take it climbing shoes are recommended? I was thinking about buying some anyway. Cheers for the help :)

Yeah climbing shoes are recommended. If you are keen about climbing get a pair. Go speak to steve at Rock Hardware - Neale st (near McIvor Highway) and he will get you a good fitting pair of shoes. Have a chat to him about what you want to use them for and you should be sweet. He is super friendly and has heaps of experience and advice and will give you a good deal for them.

In regards to the Uni wall you would be more than welcome to use it. All the climbers at the uni are friendly and stoked to meet keen climbers. Just say Hi to anyone that you see and they will show you some of the climbs and give you some tips. Most of the time there is no one there so just jump on it and have some fun. The over hanging wall is a bit pumpy at first but after a while it becomes really fun. Great for bouldering and endurance training.

Good lucky with it all

Ok sweet. Guess i might have to guy pick up a pair for myself next pay. And in the meantime ill just stick with the trusty old dunlop volleys that are a size to small for me:P Guess i might have to go up to the uni one day then considering its across the road from my school.
Thanks for the help

What size shoe do you wear? Check the for sale section of chocky for some cheap 2nd hand shoes...

Im about a 10.5 - 11 street shoe (wide foot as well). And yea i had a look in the for sale section nothing there of present though.

Camp Hill primary in Rosalind Park have a climbing wall in their playground - accessible from the park. Go and speak to Steve from Rock Hardware. What he doesn't know about what's in the area probably doesn't exist.
10:28:07 PM
Yea ive come across that before but to my untrained eye theres not much but i might be wrong of course. And yea im thinking about investing in a pair of shoes so i might go there soon. either that or tommorow night at reel rock :)

Cheers, Jack

Get yourself on the wall mate, there'll be no snags. Half the students don't look a day over 15 anyway.
