Climb Point Perp - New Guidebook Out Now
Climb Point Perp
19-Dec-2011

Hi all,
After two years of effort Climb Point Perp, the new guidebook for Point Perpendicular, is finally here. It can be purchased for $39.95 from pointperp.com or in climbing gyms and outdoor stores. It will take a few days to stock stores so if you want it for Christmas your best bet is the website.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped me out with the guide. I was pleasantly surprised by how enthusiastic and helpful people were.
I hope the guide provides all the information you need for an awesome trip to The Point and gives people who normally wouldn’t climb at Point Perp the opportunity to do so. It’s a great place.
Happy climbing,
Robert Dun

To celebrate the launch of the book I am running a competition.
The competition is ‘in 200 words or less tell us your favourite climb at Point Perp and why’. The prize is a free guide book. The winners will be announced on 20th January.

Point Perp’

Looking over the edge
Of Wind Jammer Wall
The ocean far bellow
I’m feeling so tall
Now the sun peeks
Over the horizon
Speckles of gold splash the stone
That I’ve got my eyes on
Her holds entice me
Like a warm lovers breast
Here I feel free
My soul is at rest
Steep cliffs so sheer
I climb a little higher
Stone against skin
The cool touch of fire
Over my shoulder
Whales are breaching
Life is breath
The lesson they’re teaching
Now I am at one
With all her splendor
Etched in my heart

Got my new guide in the mail yesterday and it's even better then I was expecting. Nice work Robert :)
Only thing that's missing is a bit of area history but really you only read that once and it weights the book down.

Great guide.

As well as being a superlative guidebook I think it should be pointed out that it smells good too. This is important to some of us...
When I was a kid there were some American published books that I loved but I couldn't stand to read because of the print odour.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the positive feedback, praise is always nice.
I am currently in negotiations with Mountain Designs and Paddy Pallin about stocking the guide. Mountain Designs have expressed interest in stocking the Canberra and Sydney (Kent St) stores but neither chain has placed an order yet.
I haven’t had any orders from stores in Canberra or Brisbane. If you work in a gear shop or gym in either Canberra or Brisbane, and want to have the first copies in town, here is your chance.

Just a reminder that there is only a few days to go in the ‘in 200 words or less tell us your favourite climb at Point Perp and why’ competition. The prize is the new Point Perp guide.

Here’s a sample post to get everyone going:-
My favourite climb at Point Perp is Memorable Moves (22) cos it’s a sport route and it’s soft for the grade.
Happy posting,

My favourite climb at Point Perp is 'The Deeps' (19). Many moons ago (2002?) I met you, Ivan and Werner et al. out there, and you guys convinced me to lead it. At the time I found it ball-busting scary, as it was my hardest trad lead at the Point. The climbing is spectacularly positioned, as the sandy breaks and pockets take you away from the corner and toward NZ, eventually turning the arete toward Hawaii, and into the final bottomless corner with mind-numbing exposure. It felt like every pitch I had ever led in my life was stretched out together beneath me, eventually disappearing between the barnacle-covered boulders thrashed with foam, into a mysterious sea the colour of which I have only ever seen at PP. Later we all got wonderfully drunk on dollar-something schooners at the Currarong RSL/bowls club (I forget which) and told lies, although it appears your guide-book prophecy came true. Well done! I can't wait to see it, and get back to one of the most special crags in the world.

BTW that is my official entry, i couldn't really pick out one particular favourite climb, but i happened to have a bit of a poetic moment and kind of encompassed all of Point Perp' and what it means to me.
Out of all the places i've climbed, "The Point" has left the greatest impact on me.
I am environmentaly, spiritually and physically inspired by this amazing land scape in a very powerful and calming way. Just to be there really lifts me up. To climb there i truly feel blessed.

I met my wife climbing at Point Perp. She and her friend bullsh*ted my mates and I into believing they were experienced Czech Climbers, which we were very impressed by.
I'm not sure the name of the climb, but the corner left of Grey Mist is my pick. We generally top rope when we go to the point, because the rock is so crumbly and fragile and leading out is often a scary prospect. However that corner eats up cams and hexes and it’s my favourite trad lead at the point.

Anyway, this cute Czech girl was being belayed up said corner, and her friend turns to me and says "so is she having fun?"
I was confused for a moment, thinking “Of course, who wouldn't be??”
Then I thought, “Oh! Someone who has never climbed outdoors before...”

That same weekend, my soon to be girlfriend then wife also had her shirt drop down to expose a breast while ascending Room-with-a-view Only my mate saw it and was glowing like he’d won the lotto, free boobies!

So if we can have a copy of the guidebook, it’d be great to know the name of that climb on Windjammer wall.

- Micha's first outdoor climb, "having fun"

I believe it's Man Overboard (15) but I don't have the book (any book... :o) handy.

How did they even get to the base of the climb given that they had no experience and you have to rap in?

Elsbeth -- it's a classic example of Point Perp climbing -- the climbing may be fairly straightforward, but the exposure, sea below, poor pro and run-out at the end make it a punchy little adventure. I climbed it while still a fairly inexperienced trad leader and nearly climbed past the last placement in the break -- a formative lead!

Hi Robert, just wanted to congratulate you on your awesome guide - have just picked up a copy. Great work on the clear topos, and going to the effort of Aerial photos. Great to see. I look forward to using it on my next trip there!

Elspeth may very well be the best 10m of grade 14 climbing in the universe!
