Climbing near Albury?

hey guys,
i've just settled into uni life in albury. asked a few students around about the climbing near by but people aren't really being that helpful.
where is the climbing near by? whats it like? etc... is there a guide?

Guide is the VCC Eastern Victoria Guide (all areas other than Buffalo), or the Mt Buffalo guide, for Buffalo specifically.

Mt Buffalo is one and a half hours south from Albury, and is the main climbing area, particularly in summer.
The Rock is one hour north, and is a popular winter destination.
Mt Pilot (near Beechworth), is about 40 minutes south from Albury and has some good (but short) routes.
There is also Climbing at Mt Granya on the way to Corryong, and Mt Mittamatite near Corryong (two hours east of Albury).
Lesser places include Mt Stanley (near Beechworth), Holbrook, and the infamous areas of McFarlands Hill (Wodonga) for bouldering, and Albury Quarry for chipped routes!

There is currently about a dozen active climbers in the area, with some more who get out occasionally...
It won't take long to find them, through this site, the local outdoor stores, or more recently the newly opened climbing gym at Lavington.

Is the climbing good? ~> Yes, depending on what you want/like, though I'd say trad routes outnumber sport routes in this area by a fair margin.

Really good scene in the NE of Vic. Make sure you get to meet the local climbers - this is definately the best option as the locals are great blokes and will be able to show you around, this is especially important as some of the NE crags in the Eastern Vic guidebook are fairly difficult to find, especially at Mt Pilot since the fires ans Mt Stanley well just because it's semi-remote. If you like bouldering, then you'll love Felltimber, excellent rock, good problems, easy access (it's within the Wodonga town limits) - take a mat though as some of the landings are harsh. Also, if you're into MTB, Albury has some of the best singletrack going.

Excellent advice from Paulie to get out with some locals. When I went to Mt Pilot I had the directions of, 'go to the lookout, face XX direction then turn left and the path to the Bakery wall is behind the big black stump!' After the fires there were 37 million big black stumps. I spent hours walking around the top of Mt Pilot, loving every minute, and eventually found the bakery wall. Very fun place indeed.

I think the necessity of being able to climb moderate to hard grades on granite does a pretty good job of that ;-)

The bush-bash was half the fun. The other three quarters was the Bakery wall.

I still don't have a GPS.

talk to the guys doing parks or recreation courses at charles sturt. They are often doing trips through the outdoor rec dept at wodonga tafe. Buffalo and the rock are the areas students are always heading out for more climbing and it shouldnt be too hard to get involved with one of their non course trips.
