Granger was not the first execution, but possibly the first to be hanged. "In 1608, the first person was sentenced to death in America. The person was hanged for spying for the Spanish government."
"The hanging of John Billington in 1630 was the first execution in New England. He was convicted of murdering a neighbor, John Newcomen."

"The first executions carried out under European law in Australia took place in Western Australia in 1629, when Dutch authorities hanged the mutineers of the Batavia." No word on whether they had stolen bread in the mutiny.
