I plan to go to Ha Long bay with a climbing partner. Is it easy to find routes without hiring the local guides (slopony)?
How many good sport routes are there (not including bouldering or DWS)? are there many good routes away from Cat Ba?
thanks for any info

Not really. You don't have to be 'guided' by them - just pop in and ask for directions. They'll be happy to give you the beta. The main crag (Butterfly Wall) on on semi-private land so it's best not to just rock up un-announced. It's a communist country and land 'ownership' it a contentious concept. There have been access problems this year - it was closed for several months.

About 30 or so good routes on Cat Ba itself - then a handful (20?) or climbale un-rusting routes out on the islands.
Do a search for 'vietnam' on these forums and you'll find more info
