i always feel bad about mentioning that you can buy the 000-2 C3s from america for $314 US (leaving you with a handy $250 US for postage before you're paying more than you're asking) or that you can get a #0.3-#6 camalot range from the same place for $668US...

I'm confused whether the user is a climbing female with poor spelling or some reference to a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) about climbing.

LOL it's no wonder we don't shift many at the gym - the local RRP for the set of 0.4 - 6
cams is A$1535.

And get this: we have to pay $809 plus GST to buy them from the distributor! They don't
seem to be too interested in being competitive - e.g the price never goes down when the
A$ goes up to levels where its at now.

So our cams really just decorate the shop.

So you need a 72 per cent mark up?

Why do you have to buy them from a distributor?

We don't "need" that markup, just passing on what the RRP is. If you can buy them
online for less than we can get them for from the distributor, then our markup is kind of
irrelevant to savvy buyers - all we can hope for is the odd sale to unsophisticated
buyers.

>Why do you have to buy them from a distributor?
We don't have to buy them from the distributor, but if we buy them from that website
we'll be paying the same as you guys.

What would the freight be on that set of cams anyway?

No criticism just a question about what you need to mark goods up by in order to make it worth your while to stock and sell them.

I understand that 100 per cent is the norm in some retailing sectors while the likes of giant cash and carry outfits like Costco it can be as low as 15 per cent.

didn't take it that way ;)

Margins are around 50 - 80% usually, but for these high-cost & low-bulk items we can't
compete at any margin, unless the distributor gets their price down. I don't know if
these webstores get better prices from BD than the local distributor, probably since they
buy more, and of course their margin must be heaps less.

Anyone from Sea to Summit like to comment? (he says without much hope).

garbie, would STS mind you posting the wholesale cost of these items on here? I'll bet that would piss off the other retailers a bit...

someone is making a killing here in Australia..

Yes I can confirm that as long as the value of the items sit below $1000 au they don't get slapped with any duty by customs. In the last couple of months I have placed three orders, one of which was close to the 1000au mark.. no problem. I would reccomend gear express.. they are fast and cheap.

I've actually bought a set, freight was ~50USD. Expensive shipping, though obviously still much cheaper all told. And they use superfast UPS, mine took 4 days to get here from Utah! Never could work out why they're so expen$ive here.

Normally I wouldn't, but in this case where STS's price is above what a customer can get it for elsewhere,
I think its fair enough. Retailers normally like to keep quiet about their cost price, but when it gets too
high, I figure retailers and buyers have nothing to lose by having a debate about it - in the long run STS
might be forced to bring their prices down. Someone somewhere is charging too much, and if its not STS,
they should let us know who they think it is.
