Wanted: Large Duffel for Travel

Going on a few overseas trips next year and I want to get something a little more versatile than those overpriced wheeled luggage thingies.

Does anyone have a +140L tough duffel bag they want to get rid of fairly cheap? It has to be tough material, as I will be trucking around stuff like BC shovels and other pokey gear.

Just thought I would check on here before I shell out for a $160 North Face base camp duffel.

Try Industrial Sewing Workshop—I think they are making a duffel bag out of heavy canvas http://walkingfoot.net/x/ All the stuff they may is tough, well made, and well designed… makers of Ron D Swan cycling gear.

I've gone through more duffels than I could count, over a decade or more of expeditions. Those NF ones are OK but they're a) expensive here and b) very heavy, adding 2kg or so to your excess baggage.

The equivalent from Mountain Designs are both cheaper and a bit lighter.

Lighter than either, and what I have found best, are the ones made by SummitGear in Katoomba. They seem dear for a plain canvas duffle, but axes, poles and shovels will put holes in the most $$ TNF duffel too. The SG ones are tough for their weight.

Thanks guys I'll check out both options.

That Summit Gear Mega Trekking Bag seems like the goods. No fuss, looks burly, and cheaper than anything else of an equivalent size I've seen.

Nice!

I second the vote for the summit gear duffels

I bought one of the Tatonka barrel bags for the same use, and I can't say I'm impressed.
The PVC fabric has copped plenty of damage already. It actually had holes in it after it's first trip (it was loaded up with lots of heavy stuff though). My old Mont Cargo duffles are in better nick, having seen more use and more time.

Dakine, and anything else being sold as travel luggage for that matter, is consistently $100-200 more expensive than just getting a plain duffel.

Give one of these a go.

Far more robust than TNF.

Same material as a haul bag.

You can put so much stuff in it you'll wish it had wheels.

Almost always a 2-person lift.

I've had mine for 12 years. Bombproof. Lots of trips. Now used as a soft roof box when travelling with boards.

I just noticed in Mountain Designs in Kent St yesterday that they have their XL (TNF-style) duffels on sale for $80, which is good value.

That said, I picked up basically the same thing in Pokhara (Nepal) last month for $15. I realise the economies are not a fair comparison, but it gives you some idea of the true cost of these things :-/
