quite simple, the LPG is mixed with the diesel to achieve greater economy.
its been around for a long time.

Been around on trucks for a while, not very common on passenger cars.

Right,

Along with better fuel economy the power and range are also increased.

I don't know much about these and at least a bit interested, so if you don't mind a couple of questions.
What is the gearbox set up? (Auto/manual, hi/lo range, diff lock?)
and How does the fuel thing work? Do you always run it on both or can you switch the LPG off? Also how hard is it to get someone to work on the fuel system?
Oh yeah and where are you?

I learn something new every day! I've got a diesel 4Wd and I had no idea you could LPG convert it? I'm totally ignorant about engines - but i always thought the whole combustion process was different between diesel and petrol/LPG.

combustion is just that... its all the same, the only real difference is at what temp/pressure this will occur.
the gas will simply allow this process to happen more easily, and at higher temps & lower pressure/compression.

I think a more relevant question would be why is it selling?

The transmission is 4 speed Automatic.
It can run in 2WD (normal), 4WD low and high, and 4WD Low - low and high were the diff. is locked. Basically the range is 2WD highway driving to all-out tractor mode. Changing drive modes is simple - there is a shifter specifically for this.

You can switch the LPG on and off with the press of a button. When you run out of LPG no worries. When you run out of diesel you have run out of fuel.

The LPG system is a simple and seperate add-on that does not add any complexity to the engine. Service or repair is not really affected.

I am in Melbourne. The reason for selling is we are moving back to Canada. This van has been perfect for weekends in the Gramps and trips through Tasmania.

You're right the combustion process is different. In a petrol, LPG or both vehicle you have a spark making it all go bang.
In a deisel pressure makes the bang. I am pretty sure in the deisel/LPG the LPG is ignited by the diesel.

Glow plug + pressure makes the bang, not just the pressure.

Glow plugs are only used in diesel start up.
Diesel is different in that fuel is injected into compressed (thus hot) air, spontaneously igniting. This requires higher compression and thus needs powerful injectors. I dont know if a different injection system is used for LPG vs normal diesel fuel.
A petrol engine compresses a fuel air mix to a lower pressure, and then spark ignites. Thus with petrol it is possible to get preignition (not possible with diesel if injection timing is right).
