I think there are more factors to it than just the maps themselves.

It would be the navigation software itself; the priorities it assigns to particular types of roads or tracks and what expectations it has of traffic or delays and so on.

Google maps frequently tells me a particular route is best, when it might be shorter by a matter of a mere few hundred meters but it involves many more stops and starts and sharp turns... good software would factor that into its time management and google navigation has not mastered that yet, but the good thing about it is that they are constantly working on it.

Bad thing I suppose is that you need a data connection.

I never fully rely on GPS anymore, but its friggin nice to have if your in a hurry or you are in a rural area like me.. not too many melways for the country to my knowledge
