Accomodation in Melbourne

Hi all,

Am heading over to Arapiles soonish and soon plan to spend a couple of nights in Melbourne first.

Was wondering if anyone could recommend a good place to stay in Melbourne - possibly in St Kilda? I hear it has cool cafes, bars, etc. I have stayed in central Melbourne in the past so would be nice to check out a different area.

Am open to staying in either a hostel or a hotel but want to to avoid the drunken backpacker scene.....so prefer boutique hostels over mega/franchise hostels.

Any ideas appreciated, thanks : )

....just wanted to add that I'm from NZ and don't know Melbourne super well, and there's only so much you can glean from businesses websites. So, first-hand recommendations would be much appreciated.

If you have to spend a few nights in a city spend them in Horsham. It goes off.

If you want to avoid the drunken backpacker scene then I don't know whether St Kilda is such a good choice.

Wide Wet and Slippery recommends Horsham, but Natimuk is where it is really happening for cool cafes, bars, etc (the 'etc' bit is where things get really interesting).

Simey Natimuk is a town, Horsham a city, Cesca think Auckland when its going off.

Natimuk is a city with just the good bits, minus all the crap. Once you have removed all the things you don't like about Melbourne and and include just the people that you prefer hanging out with, you end up with a place about the size of Nati.

Avoid Fitzroy Street in St Kilda if you don't like the backpackers scene. Acland Street in St Kilda is nicer - or maybe try finding something near Brunswick Street, Carlton.

Cheers Neil : )

Thanks for the other ideas guys....I would go straight to Natimuk but have a friend in Melbourne who I really want to catch up with. The reason I'm asking for accom. advice here, rather than asking him, is he's a tad preoccupied with work, study, and raising a little one. Possibly even some house renovations too, eek.

Depends on budget and where your friend is.

There are a few backpacker places and small hotels around here in North Melbourne. You can walk to the city and train stations, but reasonably quiet in the evenings. Because of the location I don't imagine they're part of the standard drunken lout tours, I could be wrong though. Never stayed here so I'm just trying to point you in the right direction.

The YHA is around the corner in Howard St. http://www.yha.com.au/hostels/vic/melbourne/melbourne-metro/

There used to be cheap rooms above the Court House hotel in Queensberry St, but a web search inevitably turns up the reknowned restaurant downstairs. You could call them and ask about accommodation.

The Miami hotel in nearby Hawke St is used by visiting backpackers, google it.

p.s. Grey Street in St Kilda is the local street prostitute junkie spot.

'The Nunnery'.. opposite Carlton Gardens(and the museum) on Nicholson Street.. 10 mins walk to city/brunswick st/carlton.. on a major tram route.

A friend stayed there a while back and reccomended it.

Thanks heaps for the advice everyone. The Nunnery looks really cool, is the sort of place I had in mind. Cheers!

So looking forward to climbing at Arapiles : )
