Out of interest, anyone ever seen a map of all (most) climbing spots in Australia?

No, but I have the one for France from IGN who do a climbing specific map for the whole country with symbols for sport, bouldering and alpine climbing. I only bought it on a whim at a decathlon but couldn't really see anyone making money out of a similar one here.

Shouldn't Maps of Tassie be under the Babes at Crags thread?

Seriously though its a good idea. Tim Toula wrote a Rock and Road book for the USA. Anyone used it? General info and maping of all known crags regardless of quality.

... and Joe Friend once wrote a book titled Classic climbs of Australia, which in its day was good for an intro to areas unknown by many.

I would have thought that in todays 'e' age, that a cyber map-equivalent could be knocked up by someone with time and interest?

We could always "crowdsource" it. Google Maps has a great little "My Maps" feature that lets you create a named map and add whatever locations (including text) wherever you like. The bonus is that you can invite others to edit the map, or even open it up to all comers.

Here's a map I just started - feel free to hack away at it and if it becomes popular enough who knows? Maybe it'll become the definitive map of climbing in Oz!

[edit] Chockstone seems to be breaking long lines with <br> tags, breaking the beautiful big Google Maps URLs - anyone able to check into what's going on?

Click on this link then zoom back. Of course it doesn't include everything - but if someone wants to add GPS co-ords to missing areas then please do it!

I just added the crown and the pines at urbenville in northern nsw. Took under 45 seconds each. Come on chockstoners, add a missing area and post back here! Lets get the ball rolling.

To the ACA route database.

1. Go to an area which isn't on the map
2. Click 'edit area'
3. Find the box for google map coordinates
4. Click the link to the right to open google maps in a new window
5. Click on the crag in googlemaps
6. Copy the coordinates (without brackets) into the box from 3.
7. Save and exit
8. Post here to encourage others to do the same.

Isn't it easier to just save the thing into Google Maps in the first place??

does this sound like sneaky market research?

As a tick list, yes thecrag is in front.

Thecrag seems to be lacking route descriptions for almost everything there (or at least what I've climbed) so as a guide it's not very helpful. From that perspective they both need about as much work as each other.

Its an open source free website and only as good as the people who enter the data...so more the merrier.

thecrag.com is not an online guide. there is surprisingly large amount of crags entered on the ACA already - most of the real work has gone into crags that currently don't have an 'in print' guidebook. If your favorite crag is missing just jump on and add some routes...

Expanding on what has been said above, the climb.org.au route database is maintained by an incorporated, not-for-profit body whose purpose is to support and promote climbing. Through the use of a creative commons license it holds the information in the public domain.

Furthermore than that, a medium term goal of mine within the ACAQ is to put aside a seperate fund such that the annual interest exceeds the running costs of the route database, thereby guaranteeing that the route database will be funded into perpetuity.

If an area isn't up to the standards you'd like, then as Neil has said, it's a user created, maintained and editable database. Get in there and add the information, it seems imposing when you first sit down, but you'd be surprised how much of a resource you can create in one rainy afternoon, and once the initial framework is there then you'll find other users are much more willing to add to, edit and maintain it.

Which area? Areas are able to be locked by their authors, if you're having any issues drop a post (with appropriate details eg. area, route, etc) in the climb.org.au forum or if thats too hard throw a post in here and it shouldn't be hard to sort.

Whilst I've got your attention Adam - there seems to be a bug in the view map button when you are on the top level of the route database (Australia - or in the States). This makes it impossible get an easy map overview of all the crags in Australia. Nothing happens when you click on it...

Yeah, I'd noticed that yesterday actually.

I'll look into it... (which - for those who don't know me - means that I'll hassle the people who are actually technically competent until it's easier for them to fix it than it is to put up with my incessant nagging.)

This is probably a good opportunity to thank all of the people who have contributed and who continue to contribute towards the climb.org.au route database, both in terms of content and in terms of the back-end. It really is appreciated.

-Adam.

Says it is unlocked... Maybe I'm just blind?
